  • 2. ABOUT KUMAMOTO • Area: 7,404,14 • Total population: 1,828,840 • Municipality: 48 (city: 14 county: 10 town: 26 village: 8) • Symbol tree: Camphor tree • Symbol flower: Gentian • Symbol bird: Lark
  • 3. CLIMATE • It is warm but a wide range of temperature between summer and winter. • Little snow and snowfall. • In summer, temperature is over 35℃ surround kumamoto city. • There is a lot of snowfall in the Aso district every winter.
  • 4. ORIGIN OF NAME • Kiyomasa Kato who was ordered to go to kumamoto by Hideyoshi Toyotomi used ‘ ’. • Before that ‘Kumamoto’ was ‘ ’ •‘ ’ means fear and people think it was not suitable. So they change the letter from ‘ ’ to ‘ ’.
  • 5. CASTLE • One of the famous castles in Japan. • Build: About 1469~87. • Another name is Ginnan(ginkgo nut) castle, Karasu(crow) castle. • Origin of name, Ginnan castle, after ginkgo nut tree around castle. • It is a special historic site.
  • 6. Food • There are some specialty foods in Kumamoto. • Basashi • Hitomojiguruguru • Karashirenkon • Taipi-en
  • 7. CALDERA • Active volcano in Mt. Aso • It is the biggest scale in the world • It means hollow was made by working volcano • In spanish, caldera means pan.
  • 8. Boshita~Festival~ • We have festival, Boshita. • It is held in Respect-for- the-Aged-day. • More than 60 groups take part in. • Formal name is Fujisakihatimanguu syuuki reitaisai. • Rallying cry is ‘Do-kai, do- kai’ •
  • 9. TRIVIA • Kumamoto is forth in a ranking list of millionaires. • Farming: Tomatoes, watermelons, mandarin oranges and rushes. • Fishery: Cultivation; Prawn, laver and pearl. • Industry: Solar battery
