Students may already be aware of voice recognition technology such as those used for some cell phones and in cars. If you have had any experience with verbally asking your car or phone for directions, it is quite easy to see how such a technology can provide additional learning capabilities to our students.
You may already know about voice recognition but not know what it’s technical name is. Let’s say,
Our class will be using this software, primarily, for those students who have motor function problems and dyslexia, but this software can be used by any student to read, compose, and share with other students. If you would like to see Dragon Naturally Speaking in action, please copy the link in this slide and paste to your internet search bar. This tutorial shows just how simple composing an email can be, from waking the computer, adding recipients, correcting mistakes, and sending the message (Nuance, 2013). While this tutorial is for an email, this is the concept used with other applications like Microsoft Word or other text documents.
As with the previous slide, if you would like to see Talks&Zooms in action, just copy and paste the link to your web address bar. This technology is the reverse of speech recognition, in a sense. It takes text and converts it to voice. This learning capability that is included in the Nuance Suite will aid with visually impaired students—whether they have low-sight or no sight.
In conclusion, I would ask that you download the free trial versions of the application to explore with your child. By taking a few minutes of your own time, your child will already have the hang of how Nuance works and may be able to help another struggling student. Thank you for your time.
