  • Melanie Kahl Melanie Kahl commented on Foot Notes Thanks for all of your wonderful comments! Several people asked about the details of the presentation. The font used is "Handwritten Dakota" and the program used is Keynote - Apple’s refreshingly user-friendly and versatile alternative to Powerpoint. Thanks for the questions and praise! Keep exploring! 2 years ago

  • Melanie Kahl Melanie Kahl commented on Foot Notes Wow! What an outpouring of wonderful reflections and praise for this presentation. I am thrilled and honored by your feedback. Thank you! These pictures came about very organically. One of the first (which is not in this slideshow), was of my lounging feet, clad in hiking boots, on a rock near some rapids. I noticed on that backpacking trip, while I was navigating roots and rocks to avoid an accident, that I liked how my feet looked connected to the ground. This continued campus, where I would often walk barefoot between class–building up what I liked to call "pocahontas feet". On a study abroad trip to Prague two summers ago, my fixation continued. Looking down at the ground every once in a while wasn’t pessimistic, it was downright interesting. Cobblestone of all shapes, contrast, connection–my camera kept snapping. Something about it made it a more personal, secret memento. Now, I make it an effort to notice the details of the ground. Sometimes it is the obvious artistry of a mosaic or carefully placed stones, other times the grit of city or the wear of a path, even still the crunching of leaves or the immensity of sand. I hope that these pictures make you think of the places that your feet have been. Look up, look out...but every so often, look down, and take some foot notes of your own. Thanks again!
