3. Who's idea was the film? Did the idea start with the writer or were writers bought in to
develop the idea?
• - It was adapted from the novel written by Matthew Quick.
The Weinstein company bought rights to the book before it
was published and planned for Sydney Pollack and Anthony
Manghella to produce before they both died in 2008. It was all
written by David O' Russell. Russell re-wrote the script at least
25 times in the past five years. Russell was drawn to the story
because of the family relationships and also because of the
connection to his own son, who is bipolar and has OCD. The
film was shot on a 33-day schedule. A more extreme and very
dark version was filmed and scenes were shot with DeNiro's
character harsher or warmer, as Russell worked with editor Jay
Cassidy to set the balance they wanted.
4. Film Rating.
• The film was rated a 15. This limits its target audience to an
older mature range of people. This is important because it
reveals to the audience that it may include things of a sexual
content and strong language. This makes the film relatable to
audiences and helps add sense of realism.
5. Release dates
• Silver Linings Playbook is set to be released in
the winter time. This is a typical time to release a
romantic comedy as it creates an atmosphere
inside the cinema due to the outside
surroundings. In the winter time, many couples
usually like to be in a calm warm environment
and a cinema is perfect for that. By releasing a
film at this time, it allows many young adult/
students to have access to watching it.
• It has been in cinemas world wide for an
astonishing 14 weeks, which for an indie film is
incredible.
6. Distributed by The Weinstein
Company
• The Weinstein Company (TWC) is an American film studio
founded by Bob and Harvey Weinstein in 2005 after the
brothers left the then-Disney-owned Miramax Films, which
they had co-founded in 1979. They retained ownership of the
Dimension Film label Miramax and later Miramax itself as part
of a joint venture called Filmyard Holdings, which is also
owned by Colony Capital, Tutor-Saliba Corporation and Qatar
Investment Authority. It’s films are released on DVD and
BluRay by Beverly Hills- based Anchor Bay Entertainment, due
to the 25% purchased Startz Media which is Anchor Bay’s
parent, and it has an office in Beverly Hills.
7. The Director: David O. Russell
As well as directing Silver Linings Playbook, he's also directed
the Oscar wining film 'The Fighter' and as well as being a
director he's a producer. This shows he has got a wide range of
expertise in film making which could help make the movie sell
better and could also help give off a better performance. Most
films that David had directed aren't classed as 'well known' or
'popular' such as 'I Heart Huckabees' and 'The Slaughter Rule'.
This may have a bad effect on the film as it could effect how
much it sells/makes and how the actors may be perceived.
I think its important that the audience need to have high
expectations for Silver Linings Playbook as it will help boost
David O. Russell in the film industry and achieve a status as a
successful director.
8. Actors play: Bradley Cooper
• The main star of this film is Bradley Cooper. Mark Wahlberg
was set to work with Russell for the fourth time but had to
drop out after delays in production created a scheduling
conflict. Russell had planned to work with Bradley Cooper on
an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, but that
fell through. Cooper's performance in Wedding Crashers
impressed Russell, who noted his "good bad-guy energy". The
face that he is staring in it, will help boost the sales and will
help gain an audience due to his star power. Because of the all
the other films he has starred in, he claims that this isn't his
usual type of film, which may persuade people to buy it more.
9. Actors Play: Jennifer Laurence
• Anne Hatherway was originally casted to play Jennifer's part of
Tiffany but had to drop out due to The Dark Knight filming schedule.
Other actresses such as Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Angelina
Jolie, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea
Riseborough and Olivia Wilde auditioned but didn't manage to get
the part. Russell did not believe Lawrence was suitable for the role
and her Skype audition was only a formality. He thought Lawrence
(21 at the time of filming) was too young to play against Cooper (37),
but her audition changed his mind. The fact that Jennifer Laurence is
only a new actor who has recently starred in films such as the
hunger games, we don't really know what to expect from her
performance during the film, so this film can either do her so well or
terrible for her acting career. I believe Jennifer was chosen because
of her very little acting and her amazing performance in The Hunger
Games.

20. Website.
Here is the website for Silver Linings Playbook. It shows its achievements in the middle
of the site, which is the first thing that the audiences eyes are drawn to. It has links to
social networking site such as Facebook and Twitter so people can give their own
feedback to.
22. Other Links
On the website for Silver Linings Playbook, there were links to other websites such as
Match.com and ‘weelicious’. The link that directs the audience to match.com hints to
what the actual film could be about and it may also make the film seem more realistic
for others and it may make them desire to live lives like Tiffany and Pat. The use of the
‘weeelicious’ website directs the audience to a page dedicated to contest that they can
take part in. This part also links to Amazon where people are able to purchase the
original book of the film and also Merchandising like the OST (official soundtrack) to the
film.
23. My Opinion
• I went to see the film on its opening day at Cineworld in
Bexelyheath. Because this cinema isn't very big I expected it to
not have such a big audience but the whole cinema was filled.
I was very impressed with both Jennifer and Bradley's
performance as they managed to bring tears to my eyes and
really made me believe the story line. I thought the directing
was well done and the adaptation from the book was also well
written. The soundtrack to the film was also well chosen and I
feel like after reading all the ‘hype’ on the internet, it really
lived up to everyone's expectations. I think it deserved all the
awards it has won because it was a lovely piece of cinema/film
art.
