The role of media in the teaching of science- Mathilde Bargoin 15/11/2012 • Find projects to join and resources for science classes in the Scientix website, http://scientix.eu • Follow teacher training with Moodle, on the Scientix portal.Scientix is financed under the European Unions SeventhFramework Programme for Research and Development. www.europeanschoolnet.org - www.eun.org 6

The role of media in the teaching of science- Mathilde Bargoin 15/11/2012• Media can be really useful for teachers to be able to communicate with each other, share experience, and understand each other.• All Scientix teachers can write in the Scientix forum• Teachers can also meet, exchange, and learn from each other during the Scientix workshops www.europeanschoolnet.org - www.eun.org 9
    • 10. The role of media in the teaching of science- Mathilde Bargoin 15/11/2012 • Another essential project: inGenious!! • http://ingenious-science.eu • Teachers are part of a community, where they can exchange views on teaching resources, technology in the classroom, partnerships with industry, etc. • inGenious teachers can also participate in inGenious workshops, and can learn from experts or fellow teachers about different subjects in the communities of practiceThe work presented in this document is supported by the European Union’s Framework Programme forResearch and Development (FP7) – project ECB: European Coordinating Body in Maths, Science andTechnology (Grant agreement Nº 266622). • 14. The role of media in the teaching of science- Mathilde Bargoin 15/11/2012• Why do students remember everything thats on television and forget what we lecture ? Dr Daniel Willingham, 2009• Why using media for teaching – Most students understand better methods that include visual, models, or hands-on activities – Media can explain very quickly a complex process – It can showcase what hands-on experiments cannot : e.g. Nanotechnology or Astronomy – It shows some flexibility in terms of time, resources and structure – Students are familiar with media – It is the future and it is fun! – … www.europeanschoolnet.org - www.eun.org 14
    • 15. The role of media in the teaching of science- Mathilde Bargoin 15/11/2012• inGenious online chats and practices – Thanks to inGenious online chats, pupils can ask their questions to an expert, and exchange with other students. – The inGenious project provides science teachers with practices to be tested in their classroom. Most of those practices use media. www.europeanschoolnet.org - www.eun.org 15
