      • Understand to what extent medicine prices impact on the challenges of access to medicines in a country
      • Inform policy makers when selecting alternative policy options to improve accessibility (affordability and availability) of medicines

    4. What can be Done? Apr-09 WHO and Health Action International Uganda started measuring medicine prices in 2004 11 other countries in Africa
      • Systematic sampling of medicines outlets
      • Prices of global and country-specific commonly used medicines
      • Predetermined dosage forms and strengths
      • Originator brand and lowest priced generic
      • Local prices compared to international reference price
      • Price Components mapped from manufacturer to patient
      • Affordability assessed for common courses of treatment – acute and chronic
