    2. 2. Early Congress<br />-started meeting in Philadelphia <br />-just after Lexington and Concord <br />-first met on May 10, 1775<br />-met to discuss unfair taxation by <br />Parliament<br />-Peyton Randolph of Virginia was elected leader of the assembly<br />
    3. 3. The Declaration of Rights and Grievances<br /><ul><li> a committee of two delegates from each colony was elected to write this
    4. 4. final draft was agreed on in 1774
    5. 5. the plan: colonies would prepare for war while Congress tried to gain reconciliation
    6. 6. was sent to King George III</li></li></ul><li>The Olive Branch Petition<br />drafted by John Dickinson <br />adopted by Congress on July 5<br />submitted to King George III on July 8, 1775<br />was created to assert their rights but maintain their loyalty to the British crown<br />King George III refused to read the petition<br />on August 23 proclaimed that the colonists ”had proceeded to open and avowed rebellion.” <br />
    7. 7. Declaration of Independence<br /><ul><li> written primarily by Thomas Jefferson
    8. 8. basically a formal explanation of why Congress voted to split with Britain
    9. 9. was finished on July 2, adopted by Congress on July 4
    10. 10. it listed colonial grievances and asserted natural rights</li></li></ul><li>Articles of Confederation<br /><ul><li>passed by Congress in 1777
    11. 11. the issue: larger states wanted a larger say, smaller states feared tyranny
    12. 12. small states won, each state had one vote only</li></li></ul><li>Other Accomplishments of Congress<br /> started printing it’s own money to pay for the Continental Army<br /> established the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775<br /> established the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775<br /> set the foundation for our government today<br />
