Our sites are as diverse as the audiences they attract, covering news and information, sport, entertainment, business, travel, lifestyle, technology, automotive, real estate, employment and dating” (Fairfax Digital, 2010) SO, you’ve signed up for Fairfax Digital’s online news and services …..
  • BUT, did you read the Conditions of Use of Fairfax Digital, or are you like many other users who select ‘accept’ without reading the legalities of what you are signing up for?
  • As well as reading the Conditions of Use for Fairfax Digital, you should also be aware that affiliated sites may also have their own terms and conditions that you may be subject to.
  • Let’s explore the some of the issues covered by the Conditions of Use and they ways in which a Conditions of Use document affects both you and the site owner.
  • “ These terms and conditions, together with the Fairfax Privacy Policy and any additional terms, conditions, notices and disclaimers displayed elsewhere on the Fairfax Network ("Conditions") govern your use of and access to the Fairfax Network.” (Fairfax Digital, 2010) The Conditions of Use , first of all allow you access to the site. If you do not accept them, you do not gain entry.
  • Over 18 ? If not, a parent or legal guardian should have signed you up. But how can Fairfax Digital know if you are over 18 or received permission when you are doing all this online. They can’t - it’s up to you. IDENTITY …you are responsible for all the information provided.
  • IDENTITY You provide all your details You are responsibility for providing accurate details You must not create memberships for friends. You ensure confidentiality and security of membership details You can be asked for forms of identification to verify your identity at any time IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU!
  • … and while you share all this, Fairfax Digital rewards you by reserving the right, at their sole discretion to suspend or terminate your membership should you…..
  • SPAM … Use the Fairfax Network for the transmission of SPAM, including junk mail, chain letter, unsolicited emails.

  • HARASSMENT Defamatory  obscene  offensive  threatening  abusive, pornographic  vulgar  profane  indecent  racially or religiously vilifies  incites violence or hatred  offends  insults  humiliates - others based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation or any other physical or mental disability. (Fairfax Digital, 2010) Let’s play a little word game…. What do these words all have in common?
  • What you do online can be seen all over the world. Some things that may be acceptable in Australia may not be in another part of the world . (Bambauer, 2008, Depken, 2006). … They are all forms of HARASSMENT
  • COPYING You are free to reproduce the material on the Fairfax Network for your own personal, non-commercial use…but one copy only held on your personal computer and a temporary copy held in your computer cache . (Fairfax Digital, 2010) …… otherwise you need written approval from Fairfax Digital.
  • PRIVACY “ National Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988 “ (Fairfax Digital, 2010) As a site member you agree to trust and allow Fairfax Digital to Collect  Disclose  Use your information such as name, address, credit card information. Opt In-Out will be available to you for any information you receive.
  • Surveillance When you registered, you agreed to Fairfax Digital monitoring your site usage. Various technology methods are employed to do this. The findings of this information, you have agreed, can be used for promotional purposes and/or shared with affiliated partners, if we think their product might suit you based on your search data.
