Hazard signs
● Warn people of a potential hazard
● Examples include hot surface,
trip hazard, biological hazard.
● They have a triangular shape with
a black border and pictogram.
● Sometimes referred to as
warning signs

Mandatory signs
● Tell people what they ‘must do’
● Often used to tell engineers what
safety precautions they need to take
● Examples include need for eye or
ear protection, need to wash hands,
need to wear hard hat, need to use
safety guards.
● They are blue in colour with a white
pictogram and text.

Prohibition signs
● Tell people what they ‘must not do’
● Examples include no smoking, no
unauthorised access, do not use
mobile phones.
● A black and white pictogram is
shown in a red circle with a line
through it.

Fire signs
● Used to show people where fire
equipment is located
● Examples include fire extinguisher,
fire hose, fire blanket, fire alarm
call point.
● They are red with white text and
pictograms.
● Fire escapes are not classified as
fire signs!

making safe or getting to safety in the event of
an emergency
● Examples include emergency stop, First Aid
box, fire exit, evacuation point, eye wash
station.
