    • Chapter I General ProvisionsArticle 1 In order to carry out the diplomate examination of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics, to promote the standard of the specialty physician of orthodontics and to perfect the training and management system, these Regulations Governing the Diplomate Examination of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics are enacted in accordance with Article 10 of the Articles of Association of Taiwan Association of Orthodontists (“Association”), Article 7-1 of the Physicians Act and Articles 3 & 4, Chapter II of the Regulations Governing Specialties and Diplomate Examination of Specialty Physicians adopted by the Department of Health.Chapter II Organization and Power of the Diplomate Examination Committee of the Taiwan Board of OrthodonticsArticle 2 The Diplomate Examination Committee is an independent operating committee subordinate to the Taiwan Association of Orthodontists in charge of Diplomate Examination of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics and other related matters.Article 3 According to its requirement, the Examination Committee sets up the following teams: (1) qualification review team; (2) written test team; (3) oral test team (including case presentation); (4) finance team; (5) credit points recognition team and other teams to carry out the works for Diplomate Examination of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics.Article 4 Regulations for selecting the Examination Committee: 1. Qualification for the candidate of the Examination Committee members: the candidate must possess both of the following experiences: (1) General member of the Association with seniority of more than five years; (2) He/She as a Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics with seniority of more than three years. 2. The maximum of the Examination Committee members shall be 31 persons and the Chairman is the ex officio member. 3. The election of the Examination Committee members shall be nominated from the floor of members and the Board of Directors first and then elected by the Board of Directors by voting. 4. The candidates shall be nominated from the following organizations: (1) Directors/supervisors of the Taiwan Association of Orthodontists; 3
    • (2) The lecturers or higher qualification of the orthodontics department of various medical colleges or the orthodontists with attending physician qualification of the various teaching hospitals (including would-be medical centers and teaching hospitals of the medical colleges); (3) The practicing senior orthodontists with good reputation.5. The Examination Committee of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics shall have a Chairman, elected among and from the Examination Committee members and in charge of business affairs of the Committee and the performance of the resolutions of the Committee.6. Each team shall have a chief to be nominated by the Chairman and the appointment shall be approved by a majority of the Examination Committee members. 4
    • Article 5 Responsibilities and organization of the Examination Committee are listed below: 1. Responsibilities of the Examination Committee are: (1) Reviewing the application for general members, relevant members, student members, the board eligible orthodontist and the candidates to be the Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics; (2) Re-certification of Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics; (3) Evaluating the training institutes of the Association; and (4) Other matters in relation to the diplomate examination of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics. 2. The responsibilities and organization of the Examination Committee are as follows: (1) Qualification review team: consisting of seven to eleven members to be elected from and among the Examination Committee members and taking charge of the qualification review of the trained orthodontists, that of the training institutes and the relevant matters; (2) Written test team: consisting of seven to eleven members to be elected from and among the Examination Committee members and taking charge of the preparation of the examination questions for written test, grading and the relevant matters; (3) Oral test team: consisting of seven to eleven members to be elected from and among the Examination Committee members and taking charge of the establishment of exam questions for oral test and score; (4) Finance team: consisting of three members at least and taking charge of the financial affairs of the Examination Committee; (5) Credit points recognition team: planning the courses recognized by the Association and compiling statistics for recognition of credit points of each academic year; (6) The Committee Chairman and the Chairman of the Association are the ex officio members for the various teams; (7) Members of the above mentioned teams will be dispatched by the Committee Chairman whenever necessary so as to back up other teams by increasing/decreasing the number of members among the teams.Article 6 The office term of the Examination Committee members is two years. The member may renew the term of office if re-elected. The number of those serving two terms uninterruptedly should not exceed half of the total number in office and the re-elected members will be retained by the current Board of Directors upon expiration of the current term. Committee Chairman and chief of each team shall not be re-elected. 5
    • Article 7 If the Examination Committee members cannot perform their duties or are in violation of their responsibilities, they may be discharged by resolution adopted by at least two-thirds of votes at a Meeting of Board of Directors and Supervisors attended by a majority of the members.Chapter III Evaluation of the Teaching and Training Institutes for the Candidates to be the Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of OrthodonticsArticle 8 Standards for evaluation of teachers for training the candidates to be the Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics and the standards for the training content will be enacted by the Examination Committee.Chapter IV Application Qualification for the Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of OrthodonticsArticle 9 Those who meet any of the following conditions may apply for qualification review: 1. Being the general members of the Association; 2. Obtaining the qualification of a foreign nationwide Board of Orthodontics acknowledged by the Association; 3. Practicing dentist with at least five-year (inclusive) experience who has been trained for totally 1,500 hours, as recognized by the Association, for orthodontics.Chapter V Procedure for the Diplomate Examination of the Taiwan Board of OrthodonticsArticle 10 The application procedure is listed below: 1. Submitting diplomate examination application form and the general membership certificate; 2. Paying the diplomate examination fee for written test; 3. Participating the oral test (including case presentation) within six years after passing the written test and paying the diplomate examination fee for oral test; 4. Re-participating the oral test within the above mentioned six-year period in the event of failure of the oral test by the applicant; 5. The applicant who passes both the written test and oral test (including case presentation) will be issued the diplomate certificate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics after being unanimously approved by the Examination Committee, followed by the report to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors will then report to the central competent authority for records.Chapter VI Re-certification of the Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics and the renewal of Certificate 6
    • Article 11 The orthodontist who possesses the diplomate status under these Regulations shall apply for re-certification of the diplomate status certificate every six years. The re-certification principle is as follows: The Board-certified Orthodontist shall take the required points within six years after receiving the diplomate recognized by the Association and the points recognized by the Association include teaching, giving speech, writing and publication of thesis and taking re-education course. The relevant enforcement rules will be enacted by the Examination Committee.Article 12 When passing the re-certification, the new diplomate certificate will be issued after the written test and oral test committee members report to the Examination Committee and the Board of Directors, who will then report to the central health authority. The Board-certified Orthodontist will be automatically disqualified in the event of failing the re-certification. If the applicant intends to possess the diplomate, he/she shall submit new application in accordance with Article 10 of these Regulations.Chapter VII Enforcement Rules of the Regulations for Diplomate ExaminationArticle 13 Enforcement rules regarding the qualification review for the diplomate certificate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics (qualification certificate and the requirements for the training institutes acknowledged by the Examination Committee of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics), written test, oral test, enrollment fee, board status maintenance fee and the re-certification of the Diplomate of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontics will be enacted by the Examination Committee and enforced upon resolutions adopted by the Examination Committee. Chapter VIII Supplementary ProvisionsArticle 14 These Regulations will be announced for enforcement after being approved by a General Membership Meeting. Amendment to these Regulations shall be adopted by at least two-thirds votes at a General Membership Meeting attended by a majority of the members. 7
