3. ______________________________________________________________________INTRODUCTIONEndosseous dental implants, by definition, are root-form devices inserted into edentuloussites in the Jaw to provide anchorage for either a fixed or a removable prosthesis.Most of the implant systems available today are clinically acceptable. Of course, there arealways new products arriving on the market, so keep an eye on what’s offered and makesure appropriate clinical documentation is available. I will name a few implant companiesthat have proven to be reliable over the years: Astra, Friadent, Paragon, NobelBiocare,Straumann, Zimmer, 3i Biomet, Inc. come to my mind. There’s no such thing as a “bestimplant system,” only personal preferences of one over the other. The reality is that there areadvantages and disadvantages to every system and what’s important in this business is“customer support.”There are four implant companies currently supporting our pre-doctoral implant program byproviding the school with a reduced cost for specific products. These companies areNobelBiocare, Straumann ITI, 3i Biomet and Zimmer.Below you will find a chart of some of the implant companies, their systems, and the type ofengaging mechanisms the different systems have to offer. I encourage you to access theweb pages of implant companies and to become familiar with their products and terminology.A list of some web pages can also be found below. Most of the companies have onlinecatalogs in case you don’t have a specific product catalog.The objective of this course is to simplify complex implant procedures for someone who isjust beginning to explore this dental field. My objective is to familiarize you with techniques onhow to approach the treatment of implants regardless of the system being used.We know that implants work; they are here to stay. 4. ______________________________________________________________________COURSE OBJECTIVESThe objective of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to be exposed toimplant tdentistry, so that the competency of managing the restoration of partial or completeedentulism using implant procedures can be achieved by those completing this course.The pre-clinical and didactic courses are designed to prepare students for the core of thenew clinical implant dentistry curriculum at the School of Dentistry at the University ofWashington.The clinical activity will be directed by the Department of Restorative Dentistry and willoperate on a comprehensive care system. Currently there is no “requirement” for restorationof an implant patient. In the clinic (RD 630 and RD 640), students will routinely provideimplant-based treatment on single units or short-span multiple unit restorations whenconsidered appropriate. Surgery for these cases will primarily be performed by residents inthe departments of Periodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.Patients with the potential of becoming implant candidates will be identified by the students inthe clinic, from their own patient pool and will have to be approved for treatment by implantadvisor. The students will perform implant treatment during their regular restorative orprosthodontic clinic sessions with specific implant faculty only (check with Shirley). TYPE OF IMPLANT TREATMENT TO BE PERFORMED: Single tooth implant, two adjacent implant restorations and short span (not exceeding 4 units) FPDs. Mandibular overdenture on two implants with individual attachments PRE-CLINICAL AND DIDACTIC REQUIREMENTS The Pre-doctoral student must successfully complete the pre-clinical laboratory and didactic courses in order to establish eligibility for restoring a single crown implant in the clinic. The student must also have satisfactorily reached the operative and restorative goals up to that point in time.
