  • 1. Is still antivirus needed or is it just a commodity? Maurizio Taglioretti
  • 2. I started my IT carrier in 1999 and it was almost 13 years that John McAfee was “discovering” c-BRAIN and began developing software to combat viruses. • At the beginning he was only asking for a free donation on his bank account…but I don’t know if this is true or if this is a metropolitan legend… after 6 months he got 1 Million dollars in his bank account and in 1987 McAfee founded McAfee Associates, a computer anti-virus company. In 1989, he quit Lockheed and began working full-time at McAfee Associates, which he initially operated from his home in Santa Clara, California
  • 3. I don’t know if Mr. McAfee was the first and smartest guy to understand that it will be one of the more lucrative business, but if we look at his personal richness and “empire”…… • But let’s go ahead and talk of time closer to us. • Viruses have evolved, now we have spyware, rootkit, Trojan, Key loggers ,botnet……and one of the paradoxes is that as now viruses business is becoming one of the most lucrative business worldwide, it seems that security and especially antivirus has or is becoming a commodity…..
  • 4. Quantify the economic damage made to companies from cyber-crime is not an easy exercise to perform • McAfee has turned to one of the main international institutions involved in the defense of security: the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The Eurosystem has developed a business model that could be adopted worldwide and has published his study, "Estimating the Cost of Cybercrime and Cyber Spionage." Are potentially 500,000 jobs lost in the U.S. due to cybercrime and as much as 100 billion dollars, the annual loss caused by the crime in the U.S. alone
  • 5. As an IT Security expert (it’s not me saying this…but my friends and colleagues ) • every time one of my friend has an issue on his laptop, desktop, tablet, pc, smartphone or every device connected to internet…they ask for my help. 99,9999 of those devices does not have an antivirus…or better they have a free antivirus expired or not updated from months.
  • 6. But what is most amazing or from my point of view and almost tragic • is that even if they have spent several dollars to buy the device…. They are not willing to spend a cent for security. In most of the cases I find free antivirus installed and just upgrading to the payment option……you will see an evident difference.
  • 7. So my question is: • we have tons of best of breed antivirus like Kaspersky, you can download the free trial, you can test it ( I think trial period will be between 15 days 1 month) and then if you are satisfied you can buy it. Last, but not least 1 year of Kaspersky AV it’s 29,95 €, 1 year of another AV I cannot mention in order to be political correct it’s 39,95 € x year
