The Spatial Information Community in Australia is somewhat schizofrenic. Dominated by the surveying Industry, it sometimes seems full of ageing, sluggish and conservative blokes.

But Australia has also given birth to world-leading innovations such as GML, ArcPad and the game-changing Google Maps.

Having moved to Australia 10 years ago, Maurits presents an outsiders view from the inside, highlighting some of the frustrating, quirky and exciting aspects of location intelligence in Australia.

  • Who am I? "Tall Dutchman with the Australian Accent“ (and sometimes Austrian)Australia: Insider's view from the outside (having lived there 10 yrs)
  • Let’s start debunking some common myths about AustraliaEverything’s upside downWe all wear cork brimmed hats(last but not least), in our spare time we wrestle crocodiles
  • Big, but empty.... Lots of it is ‘outback’ (70%), or even desert (40%).Frontier mentality, need to innovate. there’s just not enough people around to do stuff by hand
  • Sun, space, lifestyle!Whether it’s for a quick surf before work, or perving on the weekend... (note my office is only 10 mins from the beach....)
  • Anyway: the topic of this talk: schizofrenic character of our industry in AustraliaTraditionally dominated by the Surveying industry, is the Spatial Information Industry in Oz being held back?
  • Some illustrations on how Surveying and SI are tightly coupled. This is the curriculum description from Curtin University from Perth, Western Australia.
  • Likewise: Melbourne University: lumping together “Measurement Science” (euphemism for Surveying – are they embarrassed?), cadastral stuff and SI
  • A glimmer of hope: 2004 a dedicated peak body for SI professionals was established. But no..... You can’t stop “progress”
  • Is this such a bad thing?Surely both disciplines are closely related, share concept (datums, projections) and are traditionally linked with describing “the land’....
  • Just one example: Most SI professionals still think Trimble is one of the biggest sellers of GPS receivers. Little do they know that they have long been overtaken by the likes of Apple and Nokia... In other words – a large part of our industry os overly focussed on accuracy, rather than they great things we can do now we have ubiquitous positioning!
  • Should Australian SI professionals just sit down and sulk?No – here’s the other side of Janus’ head: Vibrant SMEs-Disproportionate contributions to e.g. OGCInnovative productsLet’s have a look at some examples...
  • Maptel – MelbourneDeveloped PDA GIS software 10 yrs agoKnow as ‘ArcPad’ Since early 21st century!
  • Developed by a small set of smart people in Western AustraliaSet the Image Processing standard world-wide for many yearsNow ERDAS
  • Real time spatial event processingAlso from WAReal-time hazard monitoring of 80% of E distribution network in AustraliaIn North America: xxxx and yyyy
  • Hands up who knows thesecharctersHint: Technically, they are Danish..But they developed something game changing and a back-room in Sydney....
  • Yes, it’s Lars and Jens Rasmussen. Google Maps developed in Sydney, and now working on Google Wave
  • So in summary:- Despite Surveying dominance, some great innovations coming out of Australia (perth mainly....)- Keeping Australia on top
  • What will the future bring?“Rapidly Evolving” is the keyword – rapidly diverging disciplines, from a common ancestor. As in biological evolution: eventually the two branches become so different, they won’t interbreed anymore.
  • So, I will stay in Oz a little while longer. And as long as I manage to escape from the “Killer Kanangaroos”, I should be fine...Thank you for listening!
