6305 bread and circuses 6305 bread and circuses Presentation Transcript

  • Want to rule an Empire?
  • Every empire needs a way to make the common people happy…
  • Here’s how the Ancient Romans kept the peace: Bread and Circuses
  • First they needed: Bread
  • The poor needed wheat to make bread in order to survive,
  • when they didn’t have enough food they rioted.
  • So the emperor provided free wheat!
  • But it came at the farmers expense since they were paid a low price for their crops.
  • Second they needed: Circuses
  • Circuses were huge shows that had free admission for the people.
  • Men that fought in these circuses were called gladiators.
  • Most gladiators were slaves.
  • Also public executions were held.
  • Lesson to be learned:
    ?
  • Feed and entertain the people to make them at peace.
  • What connections might we
    make to today’s world?
