Evidence based practices and resources for special edcuaiton

  1. 1. Evidence Based Practices and Resources for Special Education Vista Unified School DistrictAn evidenced-based practice (EBP) has been evaluated through rigorous review (i.e.,research synthesis, peer-reviewed). “Institute of Education Sciences (IES) and Councilfor Exceptional Children (CEC) agree that the intervention must show a clear cause-and-effect relationship with improved outcomes” in order to be an evidenced-based practice(Kretlow & Blatz, 2011, p. 10). An EBP has included a: (a) randomized or quasi-experimental design with control or comparison groups, (b) replication of studies (e.g.,single-subject designs), and (c) synthesis of the studies that led to the conclusion thatchanges in behaviors were a result of the intervention (Kretlow & Baltz, 2011). Thestandards applied to an EBP include a description of the design, method quality/quantity,and effect size. An EBP is supported by experimental (e.g., single subject, control),multiple (i.e., replicated studies), high quality (e.g., conclusions based on data), andmeaningful effect (i.e., fidelity, large effect) studies (Cook, 2011). The number of studies(e.g., two, five) varies in definition among groups (Gersten et al., 2005, Horner et al.,2005).(EBP Table Adapted from Cook, 2011)Best Evidence Encyclopedia http://www.bestevidence.orgSuccess for All http://www.bestevidence.orgDirect Instruction/Corrective http://www.bestevidence.orgReadingPALS http://www.bestevidence.orgReading Recovery http://www.bestevidence.orgTargeted Reading Intervention http://www.bestevidence.orgQuick Reads http://www.bestevidence.orgOne to One Teacher Tutoring with http://www.bestevidence.orgPhonics EmphasisOne to One Para/Volunteer http://www.bestevidence.orgTutoring with Phonics EmphasisCognitive Strategy Instruction http://www.bestevidence.orgSelf Regulated Strategy http://www.bestevidence.orgDevelopment (SRSD)Time Delay http://www.bestevidence.orgWhat Works Clearinghouse http://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/(Institute of EducationalSciences)Dialogic Reading (ECSE) http://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/Special Education Department, VUSD 11.28.12
