  • The IELTS Consists of 4 sections: • • • • Listening (40 minutes) Reading (60 minutes) Writing (60 minutes) Speaking (up to 15 minutes)
  • Reading Section • The reading section lasts 60 minutes. • It consists of 3 text passages. • It has about 40 questions in total. • The reading passages and questions will be given to you in a booklet. • You must transfer your answers on the Answer Sheet. •Unlike in the listening section, you will have no extra time to transfer your answers.
  • Time Management Manage your time wisely. Follow the 15-20-25 minute rule. Why? Because the passages progress in difficulty.  Set aside 2 minutes before moving on to the next passage to transfer your answers.
  • Reading Tips When you look at a passage, you must make some predictions about the passage •Who is talking? •To whom? •About what? •When? •Where? •Why is it important? Use the first paragraph to make predictions. The first paragraph usually contains the main idea and the last paragraph summarizes it.
  • Example The example below is the first paragraph of a passage. What do you think the rest of the passage is going to be about? In 1834, a little girl was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. She would grow up to become one of the richest women in the world. Her name was Hetty Green, but she was known to many as the Witch of Wall Street.
  • Reading Tips  After you have figured out the main idea, look for specific details. Make a map by underlining the key words and/or writing notes in the margins. DON’T READ EVERY SINGLE WORD – SCAN
  • Identifying the topic sentence and supporting details OCD sufferers experience worries that are both unreasonable and excessive and that act as a constant source of internal stress. Fear of dirt and contamination are very common obsessive thoughts. The obsession with orderliness and symmetry is also common. In other cases, persistent thoughts are centered on doubts, such as whether or not a door is locked or a stove is turned off. Impulses, such as the urge to swear in public or to pull a fire alarm, are other types of OCD symptoms. In order to be diagnosed with OCD, a sufferer must exhibit obsessions and/or compulsions that take up a considerable amount of time (at least one hour per day).
  • Important Rules 0 Read the instructions and the example. They show exactly what your answer should look like – is it a number or a name, how many words must you write. 0 When completing the answers, copy the example’s style. For example, if the test uses lower case numerals, than you should too. Write ii instead of II. 0 Don’t give more than one answer to a question, even if you see more than one option. It will result in a ZERO.

  • Types of Tasks TYPES OF TASKS WHAT DO YOU DO Matching Choosing headings for paragraphs or sections of a text Multiple choice questions There is a question and a number of answers (3-5), your job is to pick the right one (sometimes more than just one). Short answer questions Sentence completion Chart/table completion Use no more than three words as the instructions say. True/False/Not given questions Indicate whether the statement is True/False/Not given Gap-fill Fill in the gaps from words in a list or from the passage Diagram labeling Write 1 to 3 words for different parts of a drawing according to what you read.
  • Strategy for the Matching Task First, read the instructions and the example. If the instructions say that a heading can not be used more than once – cross the heading out of the list. This way you won’t try to use it again by mistake. Second, return to the passage and take a look at your map. Go to the list of headings and choose the heading that has the most similar meaning to the idea on your map.
  • Sometimes matching headings can be tricky… The end result says that 61.6% of the Dutch people vote tegen (against) the European Constitution, while 38.4% voted voor (for) the Constitution. Turnout was unexpectedly high, at 62.8%, more than the last three elections. The ‘no’ vote follows a similar vote in France last week that lead to the resignation of the prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. •The French prime minister resigns. •The Dutch people voting for/against the European Constitution. Remember! If a heading is hard to match, move on to the next one.
  • Strategy for Short Answer Questions Stick to the word limit. If the instructions ask you to answer in three words, do not use more than three words! Remember prepositions (in, on) and conjunctions (and, but) count as words. Spelling also counts.
  • Strategy for Gap Fills There are two kinds of gap fills: 1. There is a list of words for you to choose from 2. There is no list, you need to choose from the text.
  • Strategy for Gap fills  Look around the gap to understand what is missing; a noun, a verb, or an adjective. For example, what is missing here: “She ______ around and saw him in the corner” ? You have four choices: happy, man, looked, smiled. It is clear that you need a verb here but which one, “looked” or smiled”? Sometimes there are words near a gap that will give you a clue what kind of word is missing. Main physical activities in the summer camp are fishing, ____, and swimming. Naturally you will look for words that end with –ing to fill in the gap like “hiking.”
  • Strategy for True, False, and Not Given Task Simply put..  If the statement is clearly mentioned in the text – it is True.  If the text clearly says the opposite statement – it is False.  if you can’t find the statement – it is not given.

  • Strategy for the Multiple Choice Question The true/false/not given technique is a big help. The difference is that you need to use it on each answer choice. Remember that there are cases when all the choices are correct or none of them are correct. Read the instructions carefully and you will know what to do.
  • Assumptions are the mother of all mess-ups! DON’T assume you know the answer, search for it in the passage. When answering questions, you must stick to the facts as they are written in the paragraph. Forget all about your personal knowledge and experience! Sometimes the IELTS test writers want to trick you.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice! Practice taking the IELTS test with a clock. When you finish practicing, check your answers. Pay attention to those you’ve got wrong and try to figure out why you did not answer them correctly.
