  • 2. Sofia is the largest city in Bulgaria. In 1870, therewere about 19,000 inhabitants, while the largestcity at that time, Stara Zagora numbered 25,480inhabitants. 2
  • 3. Sofia is one of the oldest European capitals. Its history canbe traced back to Neolithic times. Traces of severalNeolithic settlements have been discovered on its territorydating from 5000 BC. 3
  • 4. Sofia is located close to the northern slope of the Vitoshamountain, surrounded by mountains Stara Planina, Vitosha,Lyulin, Lozen Mountain. Five mountain passes lead to thecity - Iskar, Vladayski, Dragoman, Petrohan and Botevgrad. 4
  • 5. The Church "HolySunday" is a medievalchurch. It was damagedthen reconstructed. Themost famous attack wasin 1925 when more than150 people were killed.The temple was officiallyinaugurated on April 7,1933 , the walldecoration was madefrom 1971 to 1973 by theartistic team headed byNikolai Rostovtsev. 5

  • 7. The past of our capital• More than 2000. Thracian Serdi tribe based its settlement. The Romans called it Serdika. By Slavs it was named Sredets .• Later it was called Sofia the name of the great Christian church "St. Sofia" 7
  • 8. Many wreckages of enthralled walls and temples for these times can be seen in the city today.• One of the oldest historical monuments is the church "Saint George" 8
  • 9. Sofia today • Nowadays Sofia is the most important economic, cultural, transport and scientific center in Bulgaria.There are many companiesthat produce variety of goods. 9

  • 17. The National stadium "Vasil Levski" is the largestsports facility in Bulgaria. The stadium has 43,230spectator seats. It is located in the city center.Officially opened in 1953, but mainly reconstructedin 1966 and 2002. 17

  • 20. Sofia ‘s coat of arms It’s in the shape of ashield and has 4 equalparts: St Sofia, Vitosha, Apollo the Healer and the mineral springs. In the middle is theBulgarian state symbol- a lion. 20
