Welcome I would like to share with you why technology is so important to our children. We want to see all children succeed. Some children have the natural ability to learn, but is your child one of them? We all want to believe that our children are the best and the brightest, but we are all created differently. Everyone learns in different ways, and we as educators need to help foster the strength of our students. Technology is only one part of how we can help all students learn. With the use of technology, curriculum, teacher presentation and classroom management we can help all students go forward to become life long learners and productive citizens if they so choose.
I will share with you research that will help support the use of technology and why it is important to today’s learners.
Research has proven that teachers who use: -software and instruction together you are more learners than instruction alone -effective classroom management, teacher who are involved with the learning process have a better understanding of who is in need of help -software data provides information informing teachers of weak areas -classroom instruction to support the curriculum and technology software -Software to support the instruction and curriculum
Administration who supports and is knowledgeable of the software and how it support student learning are more likely to see larger gains in the area of student achievement. Providing time for technology training and follow up sessions to help foster the teacher’s growth and encourages the use . Teachers need to be supportive of the technology being implemented and not scared of not knowing everything about it. Scheduled time for learning communities to support and encourage the use of new software. Teachers who collaborate are more likely to see student achievement, because they are always learning and pushing the students to be self learners.
When students are taught how to solve problems they are able to apply the process to other situations, giving them the opportunity to use their knowledge of technology to help develop solutions in other areas (CARET, 2002). Even though students don’t always understand the complete idea of what they are doing, they are using a higher level of thinking during the activity when they involve the use of technology in the process. The use of technology encourages students abilities to solve problems, use higher-order thinking skills, and become independent, critical thinkers. Students become more involved in their own learning. Learning becomes more student centered instead of teacher centered. Students with the use of technology are better able to learn in small groups compared to the students learning on their own. Through the use of wikis, blogs, peer editing tools to name a few different ways to encourage learning.
The integration of technology in the classroom needs to be well thought out. It needs to be researched based and proven to help students. The use of technology in the classroom can be tailored to the student needs. It becomes individualized, not everyone is at the same level. There is a variety of software out there. Each requiring different levels of knowledge base. Technology alone will not improve students achievement, it must be paired with good instructional practice. With the use of test data, teacher are able to improve their teaching. The data gives the teacher information about the student’s ability or where the curriculum might be weak and needs to be supported with technology or different curriculum. NWEA not only supports the teachers, but also supports the district administrators. You will see on the next slide what NWEA provide for the district to help them provide support for their teachers.

The use of Word Processing, Excel, Computer-aided drawing, and spreadsheets in the classroom helps prepare students for the future. Many students will be expected to run these programs in their future jobs. Even though the software will change in the mean time they will have the know of how to solve those problems, because of a wide knowledge base of information through out their school career. They will be able to collaborate about how to solve and correct the problem. Most of the jobs our children will have in their adult life have not been created yet, so with the use of technology we are increasing their knowledge of vocational and workforce skill preparing them for their future. Which is the reason why content and problem-solving strategies need to meet the accepted education standard, technology only increases their knowledge for the future (Cradler, 1994).
Technology alone is not the answer, but with the pairing of curriculum, technology and the teacher student achievement is possible.
