Have Book - Will Travel Monday, June 3rd - Saturday, August 10th Participants earn t-shirts and win prizes for books read. To register, you must be 13 to18 years old or entering 8th through 12th grade and be a Midlothian Public Library cardholder. Registration may be done online or in person, starting June 3. TEEN / YOUNG ADULT YOUTH Have Book - Will Travel SRP Kick-Off Saturday, June 8th from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm Drop by between 12:00 and 3:00 for crafts, games, tattoos and more! Midlothian kids, ages 3-12, (with access to a valid Midlothian library card) can sign up for the Summer Reading Program, and pick up a Summer Reading Passport. Caterpillar Club (ages 0-36 months) Have a little one? Join the Caterpillar Club. Sign up at the children’s desk with your Midlothian Library card, and receive an activity log. Complete eight activities to receive a special surprise! Celebrate Summer Reading Have Book - Will Travel Monday, June 3rd - August 10th Summer is the time when you can read whatever suits your fancy! We want you to travel to the library and escape into a book! The Summer Reading Program is simple: You read books and earn prizes! There are three levels of the Summer Reading Program: • Adults (18 yrs. and up) • Teens/Young Adults (13 yrs. - 18 yrs.) • Children ages 3 yrs. - 12yrs.) Most events are open to everyone, but you must be a Midlothian resident with a valid library card to register for the Summer Reading Program. If you don’t live in Midlothian and would like to sign up for a reading program, please contact your home library to ask about their summer reading programs. Registration begins on June 3rd.
  • YOUTH DIY Craft – drop by the children’s department on Mondays from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm or Thursdays from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm and make a craft. Some crafts will be easy, others more challenging, but all kids ages 3 & up are welcome to try! Voyagers’ Storytime – Tuesdays (June 11th, 18th and 25th); 12:30 pm - 1:15 pm; Take a trip without leaving the library! (No registration; all ages) D.E.A.R Time – Fridays (June14th, 21st and 28th); 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm; Drop Everything and Read at the library! Stop by the children’s department, and READ with a teen volunteer, a staff member or by yourself. Catch up on your weekly minutes. Children 7 & under must be accompanied by an adult during the movie.   • TEENYOUNGADULT All programs at the Midlothian Public Library are free and open to the public. Register online at www.midlothianlibrary.org or call the Reference Desk at 708-535-2027 Book “Speed Dating” Wednesday, June 19th from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Need suggestions of what to read this summer? Come prepared to briefly introduce others to your favorite books and to “meet” the favorite books of other teens. Refreshments will be served. Teen Writing Club Tuesday, June 11th at 6:30 pm In even-numbered months, this club meets to share and constructively critique each others’ writing and engage in writing activities and games. Please come even if you do not wish to share your work; you can still do the activities and support other writers. In odd-numbered months, the club works on editorial business related to the publication of our newsletter, blog, and literary magazine. “Travel With Your Taste Buds” Wednesday, June 12th from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Come sample foods from various international cultures while listening to world music. “Map-cessorize” Wednesday, June 26th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Using recycled travel maps, decorate items for your room or personal use—e.g., picture frames, journals, and more! Game Night Tuesday, June 25th from 6:45 pm - 8:00 pm Play DDR, Karaoke Revolution, and board games. Refreshments will be served. Book-to-Movie Event: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Saturday, June 22nd from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Come watch and discuss this movie based J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic. Popcorn and beverages will be served. VOICE Meeting Tuesday, June 25th from 6:00 pm - 6:45 pm The members of this teen advisory council believe in volunteerism and advocacy for libraries. Registration Required. Midlothian residents will be given preference in registration. AARP Driver Safety Class (must attend both sessions) Thursday, June 27th & Friday, June 28th from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm The two-day course is aimed at drivers aged 50 and older who want a refresher course on avoiding driving hazards which can lead to accidents. Drivers who complete the 8-hour course may be eligible for car insurance premium reduction. The fee for the course is $12.00 for AARP members who show a valid membership card or $14.00 for non- AARP members. Payment (by check made out to AARP) must be made to the instructor at the start of class. Please have AARP membership card ready when registering or making payment. Ramadan Food Rituals: “The Way of Eating During the Islamic Holy Month of Fasting” Presented by Yvonne M. Maffei, MA. Thursday, June 20th at 6:30 pm Ms. Maffei will present an introduction to Islam and Muslim culture, as well as an explanation of Halal cooking and the Food Rituals of Ramadan. A short cooking demo and food samples will be included. Come discover fusion cooking for healthy eating! Friends of the Library- Book Sale Saturday, June 1st 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Adult Book Discussion Saturday, June 8th at 10:00 am Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman After four harrowing years, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. Tom brings a loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.
