  • WELCOME & Thanks for coming
  • Very passionate about social media as a couple of you will know!I have run online communities successfully for a few companies, now that I’m freelancing I also use it quite a bit in trying to get new businessSo I’m hoping my advice might help some of you too.
  • Heres what I would like to run through today, with about 10 -15 mins at the end for questions?I’ve tried to keep it to the basics and essentials and offering some of my tips along the way.
  • NETWORKING
  • NETWORKING
  • NETWORKING
  • Why is social media more important than Beiber and cats…Although it shouldn’t replace your main marketing efforts, such as email and your SEO Social media is a cost effective means of creating awareness for your start-up idea or new business
  • Does it apply to you and should you bother investing time in it…?Just to give you an idea of some of the people who’ve asked me…
  • I usually ask the question…If there are a community of people talking about your particular service or the industry that work in, it’s can only be beneficial to be a part of that conversation?
  • Showcase your work and get it in front of the right audienceCollaborate with others in the creative industry..
  • Painter/ decorator who has a roaring trade, but in quiet times, perhaps want to spread those word of mouth recommendations online.
  • Investment through crowdfunding – so asking the public for donations to support your idea on sites like Kickstarter
  • The answer to that question,r is almost always yes..
  • So what do you get from social media marketing?
  • So if you’re searching for something, it’s likely that Google will have some of these big players coming up top in your search results Google will deem these websites to be of importance, because they have so many visitors and so much traffic every day – so it offers them up first in your results.
  • It makes sense to build up your presence on some of these social media websites which have good clout with Google…Good channels improves your search ranking and get traffic to your website
  • So here are some of the benefits that came out in a recent report by Social Media Examiner in June 2013 Marketers that spent a min of 6 hours per week on social media
  • All of your social news, information, video, should be hosted on your website, first and foremost. As ultimately that’s where you want to draw people.
  • All of your social news, information, video, should be hosted on your website, first and foremost. As ultimately that’s where you want to draw people.
  • All of your social news, information, video, should be hosted on your website, first and foremost. As ultimately that’s where you want to draw people.
  • You can do this by making your blog your first priorityUltimately you want to pull people to your website, your call to action or online portfolioBlog at least once a week, or add something on your site, even if it is an image – but by hosting all of the good stuff on your site, you’re making it the go to place.. And simply using social sites a funnel to draw people in.
  • 3 really important steps when before you do any marketing campaigns. You’ll obviously know you you want to connect with – but sometimes that can get forgotten with social media.Get a profile in mind of that customer or person you need to connect Their demographic, interests, how they shop
  • YOUR ONLINE ‘TONE OF VOICE’50% of the world’s population is under 30. Most people are are more informed these days having Google at their fingertips, we consume media differently than we used to. Bare that in mind.So think about which type of content is going to appeal to that perfect customer you have in mind.Content – video, article/ blog, tips, information, guides, images…
  • So then looking at the typical demographics of a user on Facebook, Twitter, Google+
  • It makes sense to invest time in the biggest social sites, but there are also some niceh sites that may give you better results, so targeted
  • Where FB is trying to become more like Google.FB Graph Search is going to be come important -
  • Friends of the business
  • 2nd largest social media networkGroup topics in conversationsPOTENTIAL TO REACH A WIDE AUDIENCE OF NEW PEOPLE
  • Start-up or new business, Twitter is going to be more effective for you in the short term, than FB will be.
  • Saying that there are also other niche communities- quite big in travel, fashion, and creative industries
  • Just because it is the largest social site, doesn't’t mean that it is the one that will work best for youOR you don’t have the time.
  • I just wanted to mentioned LinkedIn which is great for new business and start-ups…
  • Based on 6 degrees of separation theoryBeing at a networking event and choosing who you would like to speak to Great recommend it, I have found some great suppliers, approached potential clients that I’ve wanted to work for, headhunted for contracts
  • Also ranks highly on Google, so for eg. when I was looking for an accountant I googled’’’
  • Other top social sites not to be ignoredThese sites grouped together - CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
  • The web is becoming more personable.Video – making their site so personable, helps a postential customer decide if they’d like to work with you and people.Useful tips
  • Cross Pollenate your social media channels
  • The way I visualize it is that your social media sites and like funnels to your website
  • Start out online by creating a presenceTo encourage new followers by posting great content that has wide appeal (a lot of companies will launch their social media with a funny video, or competition)
  • Once you’ve encouraged new followers..Everytime someone Likes/ Comments/ Retweets – it means that your message if getting shared to their wider social networkSoyYou start to build an active community of which is doing some of the promotion for you.
  • Finally you want your followers to have developed trust and take action – click through
  • Great if you’re blogging weekly – hosting the content on your website and you can simply seed it out on social mediaOr connect your post with a product or service that links back to your website - EXAMPL
  • I would really recommend geeking it up a bit and getting your hands on some time saving apps/ using social media tools, or which I will give some examples.
  • Get Geeky
  • Most time consuming part of social media is finding good stuff to keep your audiences interest, and incentivise them to keep following you…It is easier to gather content that exists on the web already, if you don’t have time to constantly put out new blogs etc.So here are some tools to help
  • Get GeekyGoogle Alerts –put in specific search terms ‘such as’ ‘gigs in Brighton’ and google emails you links to any new web pages, based on that topic, good way of finding new stuff to post about, keeping on top of industry news and your competition! HELPS GIVE YOU IDEAS of what to write about for your blog
  • Get a calendar and put, holidays, key events for your industry, seasons, typical peaks and troughs in trading, and fun stuff, like Pancake Day, National kissing day.Plan all of your content in advance. So you know that 3 months, there is a big trade show, or for BMG, now key time for people to book Xmas holiday, so we need to ensure that content is prepared in advance and going out at the right time when people are searching online.
  • Hootsuite – plug it into your Google+, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn. Control everything from one appListen and monitor so that you can jump in on conversations, plus get some industry insightMonitor what people are saying about a particular topic – jump in on conversations.YOU WANT TO BE IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU’RE SITTING DOWN FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS A WEEK…
  • It can take up to 3 months to start seeing resultsIt’s about the number of people actually engaging with your page – Liking / commenting / retweeting what you say
  • It can take up to 3 months to start seeing resultsIt’s about the number of people actually engaging with your page – Liking / commenting / retweeting what you sayYou could have 20,000 followers, but if none of them are listening… then there is not much point in the effort you’re going to

  • Don’t assume people want to know what you doYou wouldn’t turn up to a house party to sell something!Don’t just broadcast on social media – you’re not advertising - customers don’t want to be sold to, they want to be understoodBe interesting not salesly – 80/20% rule (20% about your service/ business)
  • When should I start using social media – after email marketing, website and blog are sorted and up and running – if your website is not optimised, there is no point in driving traffic to the website if it’s dull and complicatedYou don’t own social media – so get them into a system that you do have control over – like email newsletter
