  • Exterior SketchesThese are the same sketches with the existing structure colored blue. • Plan Concept Here’s the big picture.› tilize and maintain as much of existing structure as possible, but update it to U meet the needs of your lifestyle, and also keep pace with current housing trends and demands (master suite, main floor laundry, etc.)› aintain existing window locations wherever possible, keeping in mind window M depths/sizes/styles can be altered.› emove existing family/sunroom and back porch/entry to make way for a new R southern addition.› dd on a new living area with full basement, re-orienting the house so the front A elevation now faces east toward the farmstead (not north toward road.) Tie into the existing roof with the same roof pitch and gable style.› reate foyer and formal gathering space separate from the more casual “lived in” C areas to maintain privacy. The existing back porch area becomes the front and main entry. Visitors will intuitively come to the front door, since the “back” door is out of sight from the circle drive.› reate porches on the front (E) and back (W) of the house to extend the living C area, maximize views to farmstead and landscape, and protect the interior rooms from the driving afternoon sun. (Porch could also wrap around the south end of the house, if desired. Final location of barn/shed might influence this decision.)› ocate service entrance/mudroom in close proximity to existing detached garage. L Connect the garage to the house with a covered breezeway. Campbell Residence at Pete’s Place · Remodel + Addition · Last updated: 11 July 2009 Page 6
  • Considerations Questions to ask yourself as you’re looking at the drawings:› Where do you store the cases of pop?› here do stow the vacuum cleaner? W› here is the junk drawer? W› here do you drop the grocery bags when you come in from the garage? W› an you see the TV from the kitchen? Would you like to? Is there a TV or com- C puter in the kitchen?› tand at the kitchen sink and do a 360? What can you see from that spot? S› ou need to take the trash out. Where is the barrel? How do you get there? Y› ou’ve just washed a load of towels and sheets. Where do they go? Y› an you see someone pulling in the driveway? C› ou have to use the toilet in the middle of the night. What is your path? Y› ou’ve been doing some very dirty work outside, and you need to use the toilet. Y What is your path?› hen someone comes to the front door, how do you welcome them in? What is W their first impression as they enter? Where do you stow their coats and purses? If they’ve brought things for the party (meeting, family gathering, etc.) where do they drop them?› here do the guys play cards? Where is Louise while they play? W› here does the family have Christmas dinner? W› here does the Christmas tree go? W› here do the grandkids sleep when they stay over?
