What is Global Sustainability?
 To PMI
Global sustainability is the attainment of enduring economic, social, and
environmental well-being of all elements of society

Why is PMI Embracing Global Sustainability?

 • GS is a critical societal imperative which can benefit from
applying project, program, and portfolio management to achieving it.

 • PMI is positioned uniquely as a neutral third party professional
    membership society.

 • GS is truly a value transformation of how all elements of society
must think and act in regard to the integration of economic, social, and
    environmental factors.

Editor's Notes

  1. The purpose of this document is to provide the PMI Global Sustainability Community of Practice and PMI with information about the need for this community; its members’ needs and the plan to address them. This plan will assist to effectively deliver member value. LAST UPDATED January 2011
  2. This business plan has been created by the PMI Global Sustainability Community Council leaders to establish a framework for managing the community over the next three years. It describes the activities to be carried out by Community Council leaders to achieve the objectives of one of PMI’s most remarkable undertakings. The PMI Global Sustainability Community of Practice will strive to provide a critical knowledge generation, knowledge sharing and knowledge application working space for PMI staff, volunteers, current and prospective members, such that it can be utilized to create awareness, provide education, identify initiatives, enable collaboration, and execute projects. While the intent is to integrate global sustainability across all PMI virtual communities, the planned structure and accessibility of PMI Virtual Communities may allow the broad sharing of information while having a distinct community. One issue to be addressed is the desired public openness of this forum to the public versus the potential limited openness of PMI Communities of Practice. The scope of this document limits the offerings to what is more likely to be undertaken over the course of three years, which is the most critical and challenging period. Virtual Communities are considered the best option to effectively overcome the confines of space and time by utilizing technology to provide collaborative services. The Community Council leaders have all collaborated together to create this business plan after thoroughly reviewing the report prepared by PMI. This document accurately describes the modus operandi of PMI Global Sustainability Community of Practice as well as the benefits that it brings to the members and the society at large.
  3. To PMI, Global sustainabilityis the attainment of enduring economic, social, and environmental well-being of all elements of society. Despite the fact that global sustainability has a diverse following, we should always keep in mind that PMI has the unique potential to make significant contribution by focusing on the role of projects in promoting global sustainability as opposed to focusing only on environmental aspects alone. Why is PMI Embracing Global Sustainability?Global sustainability is a critical societal imperative which can benefit from applying project, program, and portfolio management to achieving it. PMI is positioned uniquely as a neutral third party professional membership society focused on a critical technical and management competency with the ability to influence project management practitioners, consumers of project management services, PMI volunteer leaders, suppliers to the project management profession, and society-at-large (through the media and PMI Educational Foundation). As such, PMI can leverage its unique position with its members and certificants along with organizations which interact with PMI, our members, and our certificants in a variety of ways.Global sustainability is truly a value transformation of how all elements of society must think and act in regard to the integration of economic, social, and environmental factors facing all current and future decisions. It is no longer sufficient for businesses to be socially responsible in regard to their local eco system, but instead must be champions for changes in thinking and behavior involving themselves and all with whom they interact in one way or another. The world is facing monumental challenges related to a variety of economic, social, and environmental factors. Society is faced with the ongoing extreme poverty of one-sixth of its population and the potential disastrous impact of continued population growth at the current rate. And, the environment is challenged by a whole array of problems such as global warming, drought, food shortage, fossil fuel depletion, and loss of biodiversity, among others.
  4. Environmental Analysis Market Understanding: In bringing the power of project management and its 20 million practitioners, as estimated by PMI, to the challenges of global sustainability, PMI will be carving out a unique position that is supported by the value of project management in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of achieving the desired outcomes of all sorts of projects in all industries, businesses, fields of work, and geographies. PMI estimates that one-fourth of the “Gross World Product” is spent on projects; that is, over $15 Trillion (US) is spent on projects each year. With the increasing global focus on global sustainability, those numbers and percentages are likely to increase as global sustainability is incorporated into more projects and more projects are focused on it. Furthermore, PMI should be able to capitalize on the high emotional interest in global sustainability among the younger generations, the constant fear factor being created on the subject, the daily identification on the news of saturations potentially caused by lack of global sustainability, and the increasing incorporation of global sustainability into the mainstream by governments and corporations. In addition to its position as a neutral third party focused on making project management indispensable for business results and now for business and societal imperatives like global sustainability, PMI has the ability to rally a large cadre of passionate volunteers from among the over 450,000 PMI members and professional certificates in over 170 countries as individuals, members of PMI chapters or virtual communities, and as employees of consumers of project management services. Also, PMI has the opportunity to rally other stakeholders within the PMI Community, especially suppliers to the project management profession, to this cause. Growth Rate From recent market research on a random sample of PMI constituents conducted between 24 October and 21 November 2008 by PMI as part of its ongoing collection of information about the profession (that is, the PMI Pulse of the Profession Survey) with a 21% response rate (1,641 respondents in the PMI database including PMI members, lapsed members, prospective members, credential holders, etc, the following learning was obtained:58% feel their employer views corporate social responsibility as a "viable growth strategy" as opposed to a simply "philanthropy". 78% feel that they "have a responsibility to align project activities with the social, economic and environmental expectations of all stakeholders."70% feel that PMI should take an active role in defining how projects can be more socially responsible, another 23% are neutral, only 7% disagree.Such research within the PMI Community will continue. There is a vast amount of activity already underway by a variety of organizations on global sustainability whether through environmental organizations, corporate social responsibility programs, activities of the United Nations, etc. One of the potential initiatives listed below under Recommended Strategies is the intended location of all such relevant information.PMI Global Sustainability: A Strategic Transformational Endeavor for The Project Management Institute, The Project Management Profession, The Extended PMI Community, and Society-At-Large, Version 1.1; 27 March 2009, Market Analysis, page 10).
  5. There are three critical characteristics of a sustainable environment that have shaped the thinking within this whitepaper on social responsibility. First of all, sustainability is no longer a target outside of developed nations and the coalitions of developed nations (e.g., United Nations). On the contrary, it is now defined by the global nature of interaction, whether it is climate change, food shortages and associated costs, or the need to reduce the dependency of carbon based fuels. All countries worldwide have a distinct and profound impact on the sustainability of the planet and all species on it. The second characteristic is immediacy. At one time, the discussions of fuel or food shortages, or the changing climate, were the fodder of academic studies. However, the wave front from these issues is approaching at an alarming speed. The third characteristic is the integrated complexity of the problems. There is both a global nature to the problems and a local issue to the problem, in an integrated manner that makes them inexorably linked but in a way that is hard to visualize. These characteristics lead to the conclusion that we are no longer operating in microcosms or independent systems. On the contrary, we are operating in a highly integrated global system of limited resources, and interrelated financial systems. The dynamics of these systems are highly complex and operate through dependent variables that affect businesses on a day to day basis
  6. The PMI Global Sustainability Community of practice was formed as a result of the “PMI Global Sustainability Endeavor”. This endeavor is driven by: The first is that the need for global sustainability cannot be ignored. The second is that just as project, program, and portfolio management are critical competencies for enabling organizations to achieve their own strategic plans, project, program and portfolio management are critical competencies for enabling society to achieve its greatest strategic plan – namely, global sustainability.”PMI Global Sustainability: A Strategic Transformational Endeavor for The Project Management Institute, The Project Management Profession, The Extended PMI Community, and Society-At-Large (Version 1.1; 27 March 2009, page 4). “Through the establishing of the PMI Global Sustainability Community of Practice we will make it an integral element within all PMI Virtual Communities.”PMI Global Sustainability: A Strategic Transformational Endeavor for The Project Management Institute, The Project Management Profession, The Extended PMI Community, and Society-At-Large, Version 1.1; 27 March 2009, Potential Number #3, page 14).A knowledge repository has been established within the community. The repository is comprised of case studies, strategy papers and success stories as well as tools and templates that are key to integrating global sustainability into project management. The community council have created a survey to identify the specific needs and wants of the community. Some of the identified benefits that visitors and subscribers will receive are the following: Bringing the knowledge, tools, techniques, and experiences of global sustainability to project, program and portfolio management with the resultant benefit of useful material for PMI members.Bringing the power of project, program, and portfolio management to global sustainability with the resultant benefit of valuing of PMI and project, program, and portfolio management within this field.Participants will advance their capability as subject matter experts in bridging the disciplines of project, program, and portfolio management and global sustainability and as a potential consequence may be recognized as subject matter experts in either and/or both disciplines and/or the bridging space between them.Exchange Experiences and best practices between Community members.Access the community library and contents.Attend webinars to get the knowledge and PDUs.To be part of professional Community.Provide a forum for community members to help each other solve everyday work problems and engage in active networking.Develop and disseminate best practices, guidelines, and procedures for use by community members.Innovate and create breakthrough ideas, knowledge and practices.
  7. What is the focus of the PMI Global Sustainability Endeavor?Based on the belief that achieving global sustainability is an imperative that must be undertaken on behalf of society, PMI willCreate awareness of the importance for society on achieving global sustainability.Advocate on the value of project, program, and portfolio management in achieving global sustainability.Ensure its own operations are conducted in a globally sustainable way.Guide the project management profession in the global sustainable conduct of the management of projects, programs, and portfoliosIntegrate global sustainability into PMI programs, products and services for practitioners and organizations.Engage the broader PMI community in embracing global sustainability as a business and societal imperative and the value of project, program, and portfolio management for achieving it.Integrate global sustainability into the philanthropic work of the PMI Educational Foundation in bringing the value of project, program and portfolio management to the rest of society.
  8. Means to achieve Global Sustainability Knowledge StrategyHave a separated group of knowledge experts on global sustainability, providing help and advice to the core team of the community and functioning like a PMI Member Advisory Group (MAG).Bring outside experts into the community.Bring non-PMI members as speakersIntegrate sustainability into PM professional knowledge through two steps:  Develop, research and provide tools to make global sustainability analysis and measurements for projects.Establish a set of best practices for use by PMI and the PMI Community in the field of global sustainability.Provide broad knowledge sharing and knowledge application for PMI staff and PMI volunteers (both PMI members and non-members) to create awareness, provide education, identify initiatives, enable collaboration, and execute projects. Create connections with all other PMI Virtual Communities to ensure that global sustainability is incorporated into all knowledge generation, knowledge sharing, knowledge dissemination and/or knowledge application funded and/or otherwise facilitated by PMI.Establish a knowledge repository that will be placed under the Shared Documents module that will contain: Global Sustainability Data, Information, and Sources relevant to the general subject of global sustainability as well as the use of project management in dealing with it to provide the references and underpinnings of knowledge-based decision making on any actions in a manner totally consistent with PMI’s Knowledge Strategy to be the Source and Resource for Project Management. The repository will inform the working definition of global sustainability for this endeavour as well as the actions on this endeavour. Among other things, this library would contain a bibliography of relevant books and articles, as well as links to relevant web sites and other sources of critical knowledge.Spread, share and consolidate the culture of the global sustainability to every PMI stakeholder

  13. This image shows the relative volume of all the earth’s water on the left, and all its air on the right. We can see vividly how thin the “film” of the earth’s living environment is. Projects affect the world -- environmentally, financially, socially – on a larger scale every year. Questions of sustainability can no longer be dismissed as “out of scope.”PMI is determined to be part of the solution to the broadest global challenges. Its Board of Directors has added a new strategic principle [text above] to PMI’s charter, and is working to make sustainability central to the practice as well as the principles of our profession.
