  • 1. Interview with: Steve Puffpaff, President & Chief Executive Officer, Fuchs Lubricants Co. “Multinational companies want to manufacture consistent products in their plants around the world, but with different regulatory environments globally and constantly changing restrictions in the lubricants industry, that is not so simple,” says Steve Puffpaff, President & Chief Executive Officer, Fuchs Lubricants Co., the US subsidiary of the global FUCHS group. To maintain consistency in their operations, Puffpaff proposes that manufacturing leaders utilize lubricants and related products that both comply with local regulations and are available globally. Fuchs Lubricants Co. is a solution provider at the marcus evans Manufacturing CXO Summit 2013, in Las Vegas, Nevada, September 16-17. How could multinational companies maintain consistency across plants and products? It is increasingly difficult to be consistent worldwide, navigate both regional and local regulations, and still manage to put out a product that is consistent around the world. When it comes to the lubricants that they require, manufacturing CEOs need to take a serious look at who they partner with within their supply chain. They need a partner for the long-term who can navigate the complexities of the ongoing globalization of the economy, rather than a supplier with whom they have only a local relationship. Multinational companies are facing new challenges because of differing local conditions, therefore they must be close to their supplier to ensure that the issues that are not core to their business are handled just as effectively as those that are. What does Fuchs bring to the table? With operating companies in 52 countries, we can supply the same grade lubricants with the same formulations around the world. Manufacturers should not have to worry about their chemical inventory. They want products that comply with EH&S regulations, are worker friendly and that perform. Anyone can ship a product to a client overseas, but that is likely to result in disruptions to the supply chain at some point. The client should not have to wait eight weeks for delivery. Having a supplier who is local yet with a global footprint is key. A supplier who can manufacture n many locations, as well as manage local stocks of the product is very valuable for maintaining product and performance consistency. FUCHS has a proven system for technology sharing across the world that allows us to deliver global solutions locally. To give you an example, the oil in a shock absorber has a huge impact on the ride quality of the vehicle. When a shock absorber manufacturer has consistency around the world, it does not have to tweak each design for each country or have a number of iterations to get the right design combination for the oil. It can roll out the product globally. What suggestions do you have for increasing throughput? It comes down to selecting the right products, that can help streamline and increase throughput and ensure part quality. We have had cases where our high quality stamping line lubricant increased throughput by ten percent, almost instantly. This means manufacturers can easily add capacity without any capital investment. It is increasingly difficult to be consistent worldwide How to Maintain Manufacturing Consistency Globally
