1. 1. A paradigm for second language research Alfredo Marín & María Isabel Hernández Departamento de Lengua y Educación Universidad de Quintana Roo
 2. 2. Research and the phenomena of second language

Research on SL varies according to:

- the circumstances

- the methodology

- the tools

 3. 3. Research on SL varies according to :

the circumstances

* language acquisition in natural environments vs in the classroom

* ESL vs EFL

* Factors such as age and other learner characteristics

 4. 4. Research on SL varies according to :

the methodology

* there is no preferred approach for the study of SLA.

* Research methodologies may be determined by the philosophy of the researcher, the theory motivating the research, the objective factors (i.e. the conditions and the research questions).

 5. 5. Research on SL varies according to:

the tools

* Information can be gathered through a variety of means (e.g. observation, testing, interviews, and instrumentation.

* The manner in which data are gathered may also vary.

 6. 6. Kinds of second language research
 7. 7. Four parameters for SL research (1)

At the conceptual level

* What special conditions does the phenomenology of SL impose on how we approach research questions?

* What is the overall objective or purpose of the research? (description, generating or testing hypotheses).

 8. 8. Four parameters for SL research (2)

At the operational level

* What must be considered in the control or manipulation of different factors in SL research?

* How are data defined, collected and analysed within different second language research context?

 9. 9. A paradigm for SL research

Parameter 1 : Synthetic and analytic approaches

Parameter 2 : Heuristic and deductive objectives

Parameter 3 : Control and manipulation of the research context

Parameter 4 : Data and data collection

Taken from Seliger, H. W. and Shohamy, E. 1989: Second Language Research Methods. Oxford: Oxford University Press
 10. 10. Parameter 1. Synthetic and analytic approaches
 11. 11. Parameter 2. Heuristic and deductive objectives
 12. 12. Parameter 3. Control and manipulation of the research questions
 13. 13. Parameter 4. Data and data collection
 14. 14. Parameter 4. Data and data collection
 15. 15. Types of research designs

Qualitative research

Descriptive research

Experimental research

 16. 16. Qualitative research
 17. 17. Descriptive research
 18. 18. Experimental research
 19. 19. Experimental research

Pre-experiment

Quasi-experiment

True experiment

The distinction is based on two aspects:

Control group

Random assignment of subjects

 20. 20. Samples studies in SL research (1)

Hernandez (2008) explored cultural dimensions and the use of ICT tools in 12 Lengua Inglesa students. Data collection for the main study included focus group and in-depth interviews.

 21. 21. Samples studies in SL research (2)

Marin et al (2008) investigated the use of language learning strategies reported by EFL learners in 5 Mexican universities. The main data collection instrument was a Likert-type questionnaire. Each researcher visited one university for data collection.

 22. 22. Samples studies in SL research (3)

Mendez, Marin, Macola, Dzay and Hernandez (2007) explored the effects of strategy training on the development of language skills. They designed workshops to train students on the use of listening, speaking, reading, and writing strategies for a 3-week period. Students were linguistically measured before and after the training.

 23. 23. To sum up…

The 4 parameters can be used not only to categorise studies but also to conduct them.

This paradigm may provide the novice researchers with some guidelines.

SL research may have its own characteristics, e.g. language becomes a variable rather than a means for data collection.
