M0 : Physical currency + central bank physical currency equivalents M1 : M0 + currency in circulation, current accounts, checking accounts, travellers checks and such M2 : M1 + saving accounts, money market accounts, certificates of deposits (less than $100,000) + large time deposits and such M3 : M2 + all other certificates of deposits (more than $100,000), repurchase agreements, foreign currency deposits and such
And this is just the tip of the MONEY iceberg.
The truth being that there is so much complexity around MONEY today, with new instruments being invented all the time, that we can be forgiven if we find it all just a little bit too overwhelming.
