SEE MY ZEAL Zeal can be dangerousThen he said, "Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord." So they had him ride in his chariot. 2 Kings 10:16
2 Kings 10:13-1413 Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah kingof Judah, and said, "Who are you?" So theyanswered, "We are the brothers of Ahaziah;we have come down to greet the sons of theking and the sons of the queen mother." 14And he said, "Take them alive!" So they tookthem alive, and killed them at the well of BethEked, forty-two men; and he left none ofthem.
ZEAL• Zeal is important• No zeal = lack-luster, lack power• Zeal is the engine in our car – it is what makes us go• Every life must have drive – we must be Christ driven• Zeal must be directed and controlled
JEHU’S ZEAL• Jehu gives zeal a bad name • Elisha anoints him • He causes the death of Jezebel • He destroys all of Ahab’s 70 sons • He tricks Baal worshippers into gathering – and slaughters them
BEWARE OF ZEAL - -• THAT ADVERSTIZES ITSELF • Prayer - Matthew 6:5 –– And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. • Alms giving – Matthew 6:2 – Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
BEWARE OF ZEAL - -• THAT ADVERSTIZES ITSELF • A zeal for self – boasts about our zeal for God • Can you imagine Jesus calling attention to His zeal? • If you have to tell people you have zeal for God, your zeal is misplaced.
BEWARE OF ZEAL - -• THAT DESTROYS MORE THAN IT BUILDS• Sometimes we need a wrecking crew• We must tear down before we build• Jehu did not build, he did not replace• He just killed and tore down• Those killed were wicked, bad people
BEWARE OF ZEAL - -• THAT DESTROYS MORE THAN IT BUILDS• See the policy of Jesus – • Cleansed the Temple – twice • Think about how many he healed, helped, fed, touched, raised from the dead• MAKE SURE YOUR ZEAL IS CONSTRUCTIVE
BEWARE OF ZEAL - -• THAT DOESN’T ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR LIVING• Jehu departed not from the sins of Jereboam• 2 Kings 10:29 - However Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin, that is, from the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan.• 2 Kings 10:31 - But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin.
BEWARE OF ZEAL - -• THAT DOESN’T ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR LIVING• 1st Remove beam from your own eye• Matthew 7:5 - Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
BEWARE OF ZEAL - -• THAT DOESN’T ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR LIVING• WE WOULD BE BETTER SERVED TO SEE THE ZEAL OF ISAIAH, JEREMIAH, OR AMOS
CONCLUSION - -• Be aware that negative zeal tears down but leaves the lot vacant, empty• We need to be filled with Christ• Ephesians 5:18 - And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
CONCLUSION - -• DO YOU HAVE ZEAL?• IS YOUR ZEAL MISDIRECTED?• DOES YOUR ZEAL TEAR DOWN OR BUILD UP?• DOES YOUR ZEAL LEAD YOU TO OBEY GOD OR DOES IT LEAD YOU INTO SIN?
