• 1. Laboratory Safety Procedures Presented by: Manar Hassan Safety is our FIRST priority
 • 2. Outlines

Health Hazards of Chemicals (Basic Toxicology, Routes of Entry…..).

Toxic Effects of Chemical Exposure.

Laser Safety in Lab.

First Aid.

Rules to be followed during work in Lab.

Safety is our FIRST priority
 • 3.

The health effects of hazardous chemicals are often less clear than the physical hazards.

RISK = TOXICITY x EXPOSURE

The actual health risk of a chemical is a function of the toxicity and the actual exposure. No matter how toxic the material may be, there is little risk involved unless it enters the body.

Routes of Entry

Skin and Eye Contact

Inhalation

Ingestion

Injection

Safety is our FIRST priority
 • 4.

Toxic Effects of Chemicals

The toxic effects of a chemical may be local or systemic .

Local injuries such as strong acids, alkalis or oxidizing agents.

Systemic injuries such as , methanol that has been ingested may cause blindness, while a significant skin exposure to nitrobenzene may effect the central nervous system.

Certain chemicals may affect a target organ. For example, lead primarily affects the central nervous system, kidney and red blood cells; isocyanates may induce an allergic reaction (immune system); and chloroform may cause tumors in the liver and kidneys.

Acute toxicity results from a single, short exposure. Effects usually appear quickly and are often reversible. Chronic toxicity results from repeated exposure over a long period of time. Effects are usually delayed and gradual, and may be irreversible.

Safety is our FIRST priority

 • 14. Safety is our FIRST priority Be Laser Safe! High-power lasers are in use in many research labs and are fundamental to making many of today's scientific discoveries. Every employee should know the meaning of laser safety signs to prevent inadvertent injury from entering a laser use area.
 • 15. Safety is our FIRST priority Danger! Very high-power lasers may be in use. Even momentary exposures may cause burns or permanent eye damage. Do not enter unless authorized to do so.
 • 16. Safety is our FIRST priority Caution! High power lasers may be in use. Extended exposures may damage the eyes. Do not enter unless authorized to do so.
 • 17. Safety is our FIRST priority Notice! Laser installation, repair, set-up, or modification is in progress. Do not enter.
