What is Fluoride Varnish? • Fluoride varnish is a protective coating that is painted on a childs teeth to prevent cavities. • It can also be painted on teeth that already have cavities. Fluoride can slow down or help stop cavities from getting bigger. • Fluoride varnish (5% sodium fluoride)
Indications• Before deciding to use a varnish, the dentist you should keep in mind the following : Does the child get enough fluoride? Are the childs teeth brushed every day? Is there a history of tooth decay in the family? Does the child have poor feeding habits?
Indications cont.• Varnish may be used in both children and adults, it is indicated in:1. For moderate – high caries risk patients.2. As a primary preventive measure.3. As a treatment for hypersensitive teeth.4. To decrease post-operative sensitivity (ex: after periodontal scaling).5. Used as a cavity liner.
Post-operative Instructions: Simply: • Don’t eat for one hour. • Eat only soft foods at the next meal. • Avoid sticky foods for the rest of the day (e.g. fruit rollups, toffee, gum). • Don’t brush until the next morning.
Advantages of the Fluoride Varnish over otherprofessionally used fluorides: • Providers find it easy to use and fast to apply. • Fluoride varnish can be swabbed directly on the teeth in less than 3 minutes and sits within a minute of contact with saliva. • Gels and foams require use of suction, air-drying the teeth, trays that may trigger gag reflexes and several minutes of contact with the teeth.
Advantages of the Fluoride Varnish over otherprofessionally used fluorides: • Fluoride varnish is safe and poses less risk of an adverse reaction because only a small amount is used and less is swallowed. • It can be applied in any setting and does not require the use of dental equipment or instruments.
Disadvantages of the Fluoride Varnish: • Yellow discoloration of teeth, gradually fades. • Undesirable taste in the mouth after the application.
Recent Varnish “DuraFlor Halo” “DuraFlor Halo” is one of the recent varnishes that have been introduced to the market. They have couple of advantages over other varnish products; 1- No discoloration post-operatively (esthetically pleasing). 2- No bad taste, as it comes in two flavors (mint and berry). 3- More acceptable by children, thus fits with any age. 4- No cross contamination.
