In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Mode of address in existing posters:
In existing film posters, it is common that some genre of films have aspects of their posters, words in particular, that speak to the intending audience, they do this by using words that look like they are talking to you for example ‘YOU’. This effect will be seen in the film’s slogan. The photographs used in the design can also speak to the audiences by making them seem relevant to audiences own lives, which will make them want to watch the films.

Mode of address in my trailer:
Because my film is a romantic comedy, it is not a common convention for the romantic comedy film slogans to contain words that relate to audiences, but more to relate to the lives of the characters in the film. But it is common for the slogans to contain pronouns to describe the dilemma within the film. In my own poster I used ‘It’s time…’ at the beginning of my slogan which is the same as this She’s The Man poster, this means the mode of address used in my design uses forms and conventions of existing romantic comedy film posters.

Colours in existing posters:
In existing film posters the colour schemes used, usually go with the genre of the film, for example horror film posters will contain dark gloomy colours and romantic comedy posters or just comedy posters will have a brighter more vibrant colour scheme.
Horror film posters: -Dark coloured backgrounds -Either white, black or a dark coloured font is used: -The main images that are used are very plain coloured, if characters are seen, their costumes will usually be dark and gloomy colours to emphasise the horror aspect in the film Romantic Comedy film posters: -light coloured background, usually white -bright lively colours used for the fonts -characters wearing casual ‘everyday’ clothes, which will be colourful. -different colours are commonly seen for the fonts, not just one colour will be used throughout the design.
Colours in my own poster In my own poster, I decided to use a purple background for the two strips of colour at the top and bottom of the poster, I chose this colour because it links with the colours used in my title in my trailer, the colour purple is a neutral colour, which indicates that this film would be aimed at both males and females. I also used white and black font colours as these are again neutral colours and emphasise the romantic comedy aspect of my film The colours I used in my design, conforms with conventional romantic comedy film posters, because the colour scheme is very bright and vibrant , the colours all work well together and stand out.
Design, of existing posters:
The design of existing film trailers are generally quite bare, but at the same time containing the correct amount of information needed. Posters shouldn’t be over crowded, they should contain as little information as possible in order to attract audiences by the design of the poster. For example in this ‘knocked up’ poster, one main images and a few bits of text is seen in the design, the title of the film is a must have for a poster along with the films slogan and also release dates etc. I think this’ Knocked Up’ poster is very effective as aspects within the design are limited but it still looks effective and draws the attention of audiences into the design.
Some information about producers, co producers, photographers etc are also listed in paragraph form at the bottom of posters, this is to tell audiences about the production aspect behind the making of the film.
Design of my own poster:
My design of my film poster isn’t as bare as the existing posters that I have researched, this is because I needed to add more images to my design in order to emphasise my storyline of my trailer, because if I only added one image of one of the characters this would have made it difficult for audiences to gain a narrative sense of my film. But some of the things I did add to my design of my poster that conforms with the conventions of existing posters is the films slogan. My slogan says, ‘It’s time to make a decision’ this is a common characteristic of all genre of films to include in their posters.
I also added a paragraph about the production side of my film, added names of producers directors etc. This is a common characteristic of film posters.
Design of my own poster continued:
I also added a newspapers’ opinion of my trailers, which was, “The funniest Romantic Comedy Of 2011” this is again a common characteristic of film posters, as they like to add positive feedback of their film on the design, which is a good selling tactic for the film. Also listing the actors names is another feature that appears on existing posters, as this lets audiences know what actors are starring in the film, if the actors are high profile actors, this will again add to the selling point of the film.
So I added my 3 main character names to my design to make my poster look more conventional.
