Dress: Elegantly Casual Spring. The subject is “The Glory of Old Wines” and it promises an array of vinous rarities thelikes of which we may never see again. For some time now I have been collecting selectexamples from the worlds leading appellations, hoping that in the end we would haveenough mature great wine to illustrate the proposition. The Michael Fridjhon WineExperience was conceived as an annual event which would establish benchmarks forwine enthusiasts seeking extraordinary encounters with great wines. Over the years wehave been lucky enough to source once-in-a-lifetime bottles which have not onlyillustrated the theme of the weekend, but raised the stakes for all of us who love andrespect fine wine. Some of the wines that have been secured for the keynote tasting, and the dinner which follows include First Growths from the Left Bank (MoutonRothschild 1975) and Right Bank (Chateau Cheval Blanc 1970), White Burgundy (BeauneClos des Mouches 1995) and Red Burgundy (Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 1990), Krug 1995 anda German Beerenauslese, the 1945 Niersteiner Friztenholler. The dinner will begin witha Corton Charlemagne 2000 (served from the Jeroboam), then magnums of Segla 1989,followed by magnums of Chateau Haut Batailley 1983. The dessert wine will be a 1979Kiedricher Graf Eiswein, a breathtakingly beautiful example of a wine which can only bemade by crushing frost-frozen grapes before they have thawed. Chef Taner Erdamir fromthe Hyatt Regency Johannesburg has designed a menu which combines innovation andtradition to complement this years line-up. Champagne for the Saturday events arethe Bollinger Special Cuvée and the 1997 Bollinger Grande Année (from the Jeroboam). For the Champagne brunch the next day, we will be showing the prestige cuvées fromBillecart-Salmon (the Elisabeth Salmon 2000) and Pommery (the Cuvée Louise 1999) withthe degustation canapés, while the non-vintage Billecart-Salmon Rosé and Pommery willaccompany the brunch. It goes without saying that volumes of truly old wines arevirtually non-existent and so we have had to cut back on the number of places we areable to offer. Notwithstanding the rarity of this years selection we have done our bestto keep the cost of attending the weekend in line with last year. Allowing for aninflation-related increase, as well as an adjustment for the Rand-Euro rate, this hascome in at 9%. In an endeavour to ameliorate this, we are able to offer a complimentarybottle of 2004 Champagne Louis Roederer Cristal (worth R3000) for every couple bookingat the full rate before the Early Bird cut-off date. (This would be in lieu of the Early Birddiscount of R750 per person).
