3. 3. Systems of Measurement

Ancient Measurements:

Cubit- (one of the earliest measurements)- the length of a persons arm from elbow to tip of middle finger.

Palm -length of palm

Span-the width of your outspread hand from tip of thumb to tip of pinky

Digit- a fingers width

Foot- the length of a persons feet

Was this system accurate?

No, people come in all sizes

4. 4. Systems of Measurement

Standards were developed to help adjust for the different sizes in people.

Standard of Measurement- a specific measure to which other measures are compared to ensure uniformity.

When standards are agreed upon, measurements are reasonably accurate.

Egyptians standardized their cubit and other measurements

5. 5. Systems of Measurement

FPS System (aka English System)

Foot-Pounds-Seconds- (FPS) system is used in America today.

This system was developed in Rome.

The people of the Middle Ages added other measurements. Ex. Perch=5.5 yards, acre=160 perches, yard=3 feet and 2 types of pounds.

This system is used mostly in America for everyday measuring

6. 6. Systems of Measurement

The Metric System

Used all over the globe

Has three basic measurements

Gram- unit of mass

Meter- unit of length

Liter- unit of capacity and liquid measures

7. 7. Systems of Measurement

Metric System

Also includes:

Second- unit of time

Degree Celsius- used to measure temperature

Newton- unit of force

Joule- unit of work and energy

8. 8. Systems of Measurement

Metric System Prefixes

Attached to name the unit and make the unit bigger or smaller (this is a base 10 measurement)

Milli- 1/1000 or 10 -3

Centi- 1/100 or 10 -2

Kilo- 1x1,000 or 10 3

Mega- 1x1,000,000

Micro- 1/1,000,000

Nano-1/1,000,000,000

9. 9. Systems of Measurement

Although the US uses FPS system for daily measurements, our standard of measurement is the Metric System.

The metric system is universally accepted as the standard of measurement for scientific and technical purposes.
