  • 2. Types of Computers Based on the purpose of a computer, computers are of two types: ⸗ General purpose - Everyday computers ⸗ Special Purpose - ATM, Automated vehicles etc Based on the functionality, computers are of two types: ⸗ Analog computer - works with continuous data ⸗ Digital computer - works with digital data ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
  • 3. Features of Computers Cost, Speed, Size Accuracy and Reliability Vast Storage Size is decreasing, but Speed is increasing costing much lower than before. Main features. Without higher accuracy level, reliability and consistency, there is no meaning of using a computer. Beside RAM, ROM there are other low cost but enormous sized storage devices like hard disk, magnetic disks etc. ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
  • 4. Data and Information Data consists of individual facts that are not organized in a meaningful way. Information is the processed raw data. ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
  • 5. Bit and Byte Bit is a single unit of binary data representation. One byte is a string of 8 bits. One byte is used to represent a character. 1 Byte = 8 bits ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
  • 6. Parts of a Computer System A complete computer system is consists of following parts- Hardware Software Data Users The mechanical devices that make up the computer system is called hardware. Software is a set of instructions that are computer uses to perform different tasks. Individual facts or piece of information. Computer operators. ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
  • 7. The Information Processing Cycle Input- Computer accepts data from some source, such as, user or a program Processing- Processing components perform action on data based on command Output- If required, shows some outcome. Optional step. Storage- Computer stores the results of processing. ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
  • 8. Hardwares Processo r Memory I/O Storage Processing devices Memory Devices I/O devices Storage devices Motherboard, Processors, CPU RAM, ROM Keyboard, Monitor, Mouse, Printer, Scanner Hard disk (magnetic), CD- ROM (Optical), CD-R (Optical) ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
  • 9. Softwares Application System Different computer applications, like MS office, Media players Different OS softwares. Like, Windows, Linux, Different system utilities etc. ©SMT,Faculty,CSE,IUBAT
