  • 1. UNIT 1: OVERVIEW OF PETROLEUM INDUSTRYMOHD FIRDAUS BIN KAMURIDEPARTMENT OF PIPINGKKTM KEMAMANEmail: fir_84us@yahoo.com firdaus@kktmkmaman.edu.my
  • 2. LEARNING OUTCOME1. Identify the type of raw material used in oil and gas industry2. List petroleum and petrochemical products.3. Discuss the refining processes for the production of petroleum products
  • 3. DEFINITION1. Petroleum is a complex mixture of organic liquid called crude oil and natural gas. Its varies of color and composition2. Crude oil and natural gas are extracted from the ground, on land or under the oceans, by sinking an oil well and are then transported by pipeline and/or ship to refineries where their components are processed into refined products. Crude oil and natural gas are of little use in their raw state; their value lies in what is created from them: fuels, lubricating oils, waxes, asphalt, petrochemicals and pipeline quality natural gas
  • 4. TIMELINE
  • 5. PETROLEUM AND PETROCHEMICAL PRODUCT1. Dry gas-Common: methane, ethane and propane2. Wet gas-Common: methane (80%-90%), natural gas liquid andnatural gasoline3. Condensate4. Light crude oil :few natural gas liquid5. Heavy crude oil: no natural gas liquid6. Bitumen: Complex asphaltene
  • 6. UPSTREAM PROCESSING1. upstream oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the searching for and the recovery and production of crude oil and natural gas. The upstream oil sector is also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector.2. The upstream sector includes the searching for potential underground or underwater oil and gas fields, drilling of exploratory wells, and subsequently operating the wells that recover and bring the crude oil and/or raw natural gas to the surface3. The activities within the upstream sector are divided into different phases consisting of exploration, appraisal, development, production and abandonment.
  • 7. GENERAL REFINING PROCESSES1. Crude distillation unit2. Vacuum distillation unit3. Catalytic reformer unit4. Hydrocracker unit5. Coking units
  • 8. REFINING PROCESSES
  • 9. ASSIGNMENTExplain briefly one of the oil platform in Malaysia?Include thecharacteristic of the platform:1. Location. Ex Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu2. Type of platform. Ex: Spar Platform, Floating Production System3. Ownership: Ex: Shell, Petronas
