Geography <ul><li>Russia covers about 1/8 of the earths surface. </li></ul><ul><li>Russia has 11 time zones. </li></ul><ul><li>Russia’s mountain range is the border of Europe and Asia. </li></ul><ul><li>Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the oldest and deepest lakes of the world. </li></ul><ul><li>Russia has the largest plain on earth, called the Siberian Plain. </li></ul>

Geography (cont.) <ul><li>The Neva River in St. Petersburg is the shortest and deepest European River. </li></ul><ul><li>The lowest point is the Caspian Sea. </li></ul><ul><li>The highest Point is Elbrus Mountain. </li></ul><ul><li>Moscow is the Capital or Russia. Moscow is over 850 years old. </li></ul>

School <ul><li>Russia has the highest literacy rate in the world. </li></ul><ul><li>In schools, the teachers are strict. </li></ul><ul><li>Students are told what the answer is, not why the answer is what it is. The teacher wont say “how did you get that answer?”. It’s either right or wrong. </li></ul>

At home <ul><li>Unlike work and in public where they are a whole different person, at home they are relaxed, secure, and speak of what's on their minds. </li></ul><ul><li>Hand shaking in Russia is a big sign of respect. </li></ul><ul><li>Also, in the Russian language, it takes 10% longer to say something than in English. </li></ul>

About Russia <ul><li>The population is about 145 million people. </li></ul><ul><li>They speak their native language, Russian. </li></ul><ul><li>80% of the population lives in the West. </li></ul><ul><li>11 million people live in Moscow. </li></ul><ul><li>Music and art is important to their culture. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Religion <ul><li>The religion is mostly Orthodox. </li></ul><ul><li>There are also others: </li></ul><ul><li>Islam </li></ul><ul><li>Catholicism </li></ul><ul><li>Protestantism </li></ul><ul><li>and Judaism </li></ul>

Drinking <ul><li>There are several exceptions for drinking alcohol in Russia. </li></ul><ul><li>At any age, kids can drink vodka as it is their national beverage. </li></ul><ul><li>18 is the age to buy or drink 22% or less. </li></ul><ul><li>21 is the age to buy or drink 22% or more. </li></ul><ul><li>However, there are certain salesmen that sell alcohol to underage kids. </li></ul>

Food <ul><li>Popular Main Courses: Omelets, Meats </li></ul><ul><li>Soups: Fish soup, Chicken soup, mushroom soup, noodle soup, cold soup. </li></ul><ul><li>Appetizers: sheep skin, salmon, beef. </li></ul><ul><li>Dessert: Pancakes, pastries. </li></ul><ul><li>Beverages: Vodka, beer, Samgon, Kompot. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Independence <ul><li>Russia became an independent country on June 12 th , 1991. </li></ul><ul><li>On this day, the Russians spend their time in their “dachas”, away home. </li></ul><ul><li>It’s where they plant things and relax. </li></ul>
  13. 13. The Flag <ul><li>White: Generosity </li></ul><ul><li>Blue: Loyalty, Honesty, Wisdom </li></ul><ul><li>Red: Courage, Love </li></ul>
  14. 14. Age of Absolutism <ul><li>Russia, Prussia, Britain, France, and Austria were all together as a strong monarchy. </li></ul><ul><li>They wanted to be a powerful nation. </li></ul>
