  1. 1. catacombs  Noun  an underground cemetery, especially one consisting of tunnels and rooms with recesses dug out for coffins and tombs.  The catacombs were creepy and filled with spider webs.
  2. 2. virtuoso  Noun.  A person who has special knowledge or skill in a field.  Mozart was considered a virtuoso on the piano, as he was playing and composing as a young child.
  3. 3. impunity  Noun.  Exemption from punishment; immunity from detrimental effects, as of an action.  The criminal received impunity after he ratted out a fellow prisoner.
  4. 4. fetter  Noun  Chain or shackle placed on the feet. *Can be used as a verb without changing the spelling.  The fetters on the slave’s feet cut into her legs.
  5. 5. connoisseur  Noun.  a discerning judge of the best in any field; a person who is especially competent to pass critical judgments in an art.  He is a connoisseur of modern art, and he visits galleries often to comment upon the artwork.
  6. 6. gait  Noun.  a manner of walking, stepping, or running.  The gait of the cat was slow and unconcerned.
  7. 7. precluded  Verb (past)  To prevent the presence, existence, or occurrence of; make impossible.  The insufficiency of the evidence precludes a conviction.
  8. 8. Niche  Noun.  Suitable place for somebody; specialized market; wall recess or hollow place; alcove; nook.  The Niche was the perfect place to sit and read a book without being disturbed.
  9. 9. afflicted  Verb (past)  To distress with mental or bodily pain; trouble greatly or grievously; vex; harass.  The old lady was afflicted with arthritis. .
  10. 10. explicit  Adjective  fully and clearly expressed or demonstrated; leaving nothing merely implied.  The explicit language in the film drove the rating up from PG-13 to R.
  11. 11. Intermingle  Verb.  Mix or become mixed; mingle; combine.  The brown sugar intermingled with the oatmeal, swirling into a mixture of sweet goodness.
  12. 12. Rampart  noun.  Fortified embankment; protection; wall.  The ramparts surrounding the town protected it from outside invaders.
