Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugene von Blaas orEugenio de Blaas (24 July 1843 – 10 February 1932) was anItalian painter in the school known as Academic Classicism.He was born at Albano, near Rome, to Austrian parents.His father Karl, also a painter, was his teacher. The familymoved to Venice when Karl became Professor at theAcademy in Venice. He often painted scenes in Venice. Hebecame professor in the Academy of Venice.His colorful and rather theatrical period images ofVenetian society, e.g. On the Balcony (1877; PrivateCollection), were quite different compared to delicatepastels and etchings of the courtyards, balcony and canalsof modern Venice.Eugene de Blaas paintings are collected at the RoyalAcademy, Fine Art Society, New Gallery and Arthur Toothand Sons Gallery in London, and also at the Walker ArtGallery in Liverpool.
