Titanium Music Video Analysis
1. Titanium Music
Video Final Edit Evaluation
Throughout this evaluation I will critically analyse the music video I created for
the song “Titanium” by David Guetta featuring Sia. The music video I created
features a realistic narrative of a young girl who has problems at home, runs
away and follows her dream of going to acting school, I feel that this
automatically anchors the song and lyrics due to the fact that “Titanium”
features lyrics referring to a person’s inner strength and being strong no
matter what bad thing are thrown at you. This meaning was also emphasized
throughout my music video by having the young girl represented as vulnerable
at the beginning of the video in contrast to the end of the music video where
she is represented strong and powerful on a stage.
In my final edit I decided to add an extra shot to the beginning of my music
video of a cloudy sky becoming clear, not only did I think that this would look
good and feel that it is a good way of starting the music video, I also feel that it
symbolises the themes within this particular song by having a dark cloudy skies
turn into a blue clear sky it symbolises the theme that things get better and
less dull.
This was followed by two establishing shots, firstly an out of focus shot of a
motorway which slowly becomes focused followed by a pan of the house
where within the narrative the young girl lives, this shot has a noticeable
stereotypical representation of where a young troubled girl would live by
showing a block of council flats.
2. Although I feel the movement of the pan of the living room was good and we
did a good job of representing the young girl as vulnerable by having her crying
on the couch then showing a shadow of her parents fighting on the wall. I do
feel that if I had more time I would spend it improving the shadow on the wall
so that it is a lot clearer, as well as improving the lighting in this particular
scene.
In my final edit I also decided to add a shot of a close up of the booklet the
young girl is reading, I did this because after watching my rough edit I felt as
though the narrative was a bit unclear in terms of how the young girl ended up
on a stage at the end of the music video, therefore I felt by including this short
clip of a booklet containing details about a drama school it would give the
audience better understanding of the girls dreams of being on stage.
Also after watching the rough edit I felt that because we were un able to get
footage of the character actually getting on the train and feeling as if I needed
to include more footage that would inform the audience that the character
actually got onto the train, I therefore added 2 more shots in my final edit of
the character reading the train times.
When the character had a flashback of her parents fighting, I edited that
particular shot by adding a black and white effect due to the fact I feel this was
an effective way of ensuring that the audience were aware that this scene was
in the past. In my rough edit I noticed that there was number of the London
establishing shots that were shaky, therefore in my final edit I used after
effects to stabilize the footage.
During the scenes where the character I sat in a doorway, I particularly like the
quality of the close up shot of the side of the characters face. I feel that using
this particular shot works effectively because the close up creates a more
3. personal feel for the audience, therefore making them sympathise with the
character and her situation.
The next scene features a pan of a café where the character is now working, I
feel that the movement of the pan was good and I also feel that this was a
good way of representing the character less vulnerable than at the beginning
of the music video.
The final scene features a shot of the character on stage. This shot was filmed
from a lower angle than the character, therefore creating a sense of
dominance, representing the character a strong and powerful, a big contrast to
the vulnerable character at the beginning of the music video, therefore
anchoring the themes of the actual song.
Throughout this music video I decided to use minimal editing and video
transitions therefore jump cutting from clip to clip, mainly due to the fact it is a
realistic narrative and I wanted it to look as realistic as possible, however I did
make slight changes to the footage, such as colour correcting a number of
shots.
However I feel that the main weakness of this music video is that the narrative
isn’t completely clear and I feel that if I had had more time or could do this task
again then I would ensure to spend more time filming extra clips such as the
character getting on and off the train, and walking from the café to the drama
school and maybe even footage of the character rehearsing more, so that the
narrative is much clearer to the audience.
