Last year in Chiapas, we worked with various community members to make 3 improved cookstoves, some prototype windbelts, a microhydro feasibility study, 3 rainwater catchment systems and a biogas digestor. http://appropedia.org/HSU_Chiapas. This year, we will be working with new partners in a low income barrio called La Yuca in Santo Domingo. On Monday, we will be having another community meeting to explore needs, resources, obstacles and opportunities.
For example, there is a school with a strong need for more rooms. Also, energy is very expensive here and there is interest and desire to explore small scale energy systems. The number of people ready to work on these opportunities is incredible. Once the ‘meeting of neighbors’ understood what our program does: specifically that we do not bring a solution or donations and that we instead want to work together to learn and work towards solutions, they offered all types of amazing support and words. Words so beautiful that I at first tried to speak after but it sounds like a raspberry after an aria… so I gave up.
