The future for fuel cells

  1. 1. Fuel Cell Today Fuel Cells – It’s the Eco2nomy, Stupid GRAPH Dr. Kerry-Ann Adamson Fuel Cell Today www.fuelcelltoday.com
  2. 2. The ECO2NOMY Emissions GRAPH Sustainability Economic Power…. Growth
  3. 3. Why are Fuel Cells Sustainable? They use fossil fuel resources more efficiently; They reduce emissions*; They provide economic growth opportunities; GRAPH They provide a utility benefit. *unless you produce the hydrogen from coal without CCS
  4. 4. They Are More Efficient – Fossil Fuels "When will we have clean hydrogen? To me it makes no sense promoting hydrogen usage if the large majority of its production comes from fossil fuels.” LinkedIn discussion, over 150 comments GRAPH WRONG!
  5. 5. They Reduce Emissions Data from Japan shows a IPCC Estimate of GHG 30 – 50% reduction in CO2 Emissions Sources emissions from homes operating a NG mCHP units; GRAPH Albertsons Supermarket is expected to save 478 metric tons of CO2 each year with its UTC 400 Purecell; Emissions avoided by using a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain in a bus are Transport Commercial between 4180 – 4905 ktons Industrial Residential GHGs per annum
  6. 6. Fuels for Fuel Cells
  7. 7. Fuel and Emissions Fuel cells are efficient conversion devices – less muck in = less muck out; Production of merchant hydrogen and merchant GRAPH methanol needs to be the focus of reduction of emissions – oligopoly supply; Quit throwing a fit at the use of direct fossil fuels. Looking out less than 10 years direct fossil fuel use only makes up 6% of the market; Dynamics to watch – hydrogen production companies (the majors and the juniors)
  8. 8. Economic Gains – Green Collar Jobs Sustainability is also economic sustainability; Fuel cell industry to date has created more R&D jobs than the rest of the supply chain – this is starting to change; GRAPH More and more regions are waking up to the economic potential of fuel cells in terms of job creation including South Africa, India and Mexico; Swings and roundabouts – jobs created and jobs lost; Roadblocks……
  9. 9. FCT Job Model – Cumulative 000’s Jobs Created 700 600 500 GRAPH 400 300 200 100 0 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 Portable Stationary Transport
  10. 10. Comparison with Other Sectors Wind – in Europe it is estimated that the industry has created some 12,000 jobs pa between 2002 – 2007; By the end of the decade our forecast shows the fuel cell industry in Europe to be over 50% larger, in terms of GRAPH employment, than the wind industry; Solar PV – estimates are that 75,000 new jobs have been created in Europe over the past decade; This is about half of what we see being created by the fuel cell industry over the next 10 years in Europe; What about synergy? Using hydrogen to store renewables allowing more uptake, more jobs etc. – this is NOT a competition.
  11. 11. Finally – 2nd Degree Job Creation In Africa mobile phones are being used for banking, money transfer etc. They are the life blood of the growing independent micro-economy; The lack of reliable service mobile phone service is GRAPH slowing this down; Base Stations are being targeted for fuel cell roll out due to be less of a target for theft, reliable, less polluting etc. Getting more base stations and more fuel cells into the market for Africa is helping the micro-economy. POWER… TO THE PEOPLE
  12. 12. Key Points: Fuel cells are efficient conversion devices now, they are only going to get better; Less muck in = less muck out; GRAPH To further reduce emissions need to focus on merchant hydrogen and merchant methanol production; Over 1 million new jobs could be created over the next 10 years in the fuel cell industry – big winners could well not be the traditional economies – political implications
