  2. 2. What is a paragraph? <ul><li>A series of sentences devoted to a topic or a main idea. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Common Types of Paragraphs <ul><li>The most common types of paragraphs are: </li></ul><ul><li>Narrative </li></ul><ul><li>Expository </li></ul><ul><li>Descriptive </li></ul><ul><li>Persuasive </li></ul>
  4. 4. Parts of the Paragraph <ul><li>The paragraph usually has three parts: </li></ul><ul><li>Topic Sentence </li></ul><ul><li>Supporting Details </li></ul><ul><li>Closing Sentence </li></ul>
  5. 5. Topic Sentence <ul><li>Introduces the main idea in the paragraph. </li></ul><ul><li>It does not give too many details to the reader. </li></ul><ul><li>Only an idea of what the paragraph will be about. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Supporting Details <ul><li>In a few sentences, give details to develop and support the main idea of the paragraph. </li></ul><ul><li>You should give supporting facts, details and examples. </li></ul><ul><li>This will help the reader understand your topic better. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Closing Sentence <ul><li>This is also called Concluding Statement. </li></ul><ul><li>Restates the main idea in the paragraph using different words. </li></ul>

Tips for Writing a Paragraph <ul><li>Always proof read what you write. </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t be afraid to edit or change something in your writing. </li></ul><ul><li>Remember that a paragraph must be coherent. </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t be afraid to use transitional phrases. </li></ul><ul><li>Stay on one idea. </li></ul>

Example of a paragraph <ul><li>Here is an example of a paragraph: </li></ul><ul><li>“ My hometown is famous for several amazing natural features.  First, it is noted for the Wheaton River, which is very wide and beautiful. Also, on the other side of the town is Wheaton Hill, which is unusual because it is very steep. The third amazing feature is the Big Old Tree. This tree stands two hundred feet tall and is probably about six hundred years old. These three landmarks are truly amazing and make my hometown a famous place.” </li></ul>

Your paragraph should have five (5) sentences or more. </li></ul><ul><li>Format: </li></ul><ul><li>(1) Topic Sentence </li></ul><ul><li>(3 or more) Supporting Details </li></ul><ul><li>(1) Closing Sentence </li></ul>
