  • 1. 10 Facts about JAPAN The Japanese are very interesting people. Their unique culture has developed in relative isolation due to the mountainous and island-based nature of the country. As the Summer Olympics from 2020 will take place in Tokyo, thousands of people are expected to travel to Japan. If you're one of them, or if you just want to visit this country some day, here are a few things that you should know about the Japanese.

  • 3. 1. Japan is made up of 6,852 islands.
  • 4. 2. The 4 main islands, Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku and Hokkaido comprise 97% of Japan’s total land area. HOKKAIDO SHIKOKU HONSU KYUSHU
  • 5. 3. Almost 4/5 of Japan's land is either forest or mountains and is difficult to be made into farms, industrial or residential areas.
  • 6. 4. More than 70% of Japan consists of mountains, including > 200 volcanoes.
  • 7. 5. Mount Fuji (3,776m or 12,388ft), the highest mountain in Japan, is an active volcano.
  • 8. 6. There are > 1,500 earthquakes in Japan each year, though most of them are minor.
  • 9. 7. Rivers are generally steep and swift, and few are suitable for navigation except in their lower reaches. The Shinano River is the longest, flows into the Sea of Japan, is only 367 km long.
  • 10. 8. The largest freshwater lake is Lake Biwa, northeast of Kyoto. The area of this lake is about 670 km².
  • 11. 9. The Sea of Japan is a meeting point of a warm current that flows from the south and a colder current from the north. The mixing of waters makes the seas around Japan very rich in fish and other sea life.
