    • Improve internal communications
    • Continue building cooperative partnerships to improve downtown safety and sustainability, encourage code enforcement & develop a long-range plan for the district
    • Continue building program capacity, e.g. human resource, fund-raising, organizational and intellectual development
    • Join regional economic development alliances as appropriate, e.g. Kankakee River Roundtable
    • Support and promote the value of entrepreneurism
    • Develop means of strengthening MSM’s volunteer and financial partner base & increasing visibility of volunteers
    • Lay groundwork for developing a long-range strategic plan for Main Street Momence

    • MSM also continued to administer the following quality projects:
    • Façade Grant Program, Downtown Excellence Awards Program, Community Banner Program, Buzz 4 Biz business seminars, Dixie Daze Celebration, Cruise Nights, Bordertown Hauntings, Christmas Gathering, Downtown flower maintenance & decorations, flower baskets on the Island Park walk bridge, Downtown Beautification Day, Historic House Museum cottage garden maintenance and more.

  • 7. “ In an economic climate best described as grim, there were eight new businesses started in the Main Street zone in 2010. Two closed. Seventeen new full-time jobs were added. Four were lost. There were 31 part-time jobs added. “ Now the addition of 13 jobs will scarcely show up in Kankakee County statistics … but it shows what can be done. While many think of the large, sweeping solutions, the tiny step may be the critical one. “ Main Street Momence is really a whole bunch of ideas wrapped into one office … and it’s working.” Daily Journal editorial, September 21, 2011

  • 17. Low-interest Loan Program
    • In August 2009, Main Street Momence was awarded a $99,000 USDA Rural Development Grant. Kankakee County provided $50,000 as the local match for the revolving loan fund. The program is overseen by a dedicated committee.
    • Goals of the Main Street Momence Revolving Loan Program will be:
      • To serve as an incentive for economic development in the downtown core
      • To serve as a low-interest, gap financing source
      • To retain employment in the downtown district
      • To stimulate commercial activity in the downtown district
      • To provide financing to business owners for a variety of needs, including repairs, equipment and building maintenance
      • To recruit business and create jobs in the downtown commercial district

    $83,000 distributed $66,000 available (as of 10-25-11)
  • 18. “ Main Street Momence had laid much of the groundwork necessary to be considered for the U.S. Rural Development Grant. Their investment in the Greenburg Development Study and their pursuit of a National Register of Historic Places designation placed them in serious contention for this competitive funding. “ One of Kankakee County’s most active, engaged and effective non-profit organizations, Main Street Momence is a vital partner in the regional economic development landscape.” -Mike Van Mill, Economic Alliance of Kankakee County

    • In July, Illinois Main Street representatives visited Momence to meet with MSM staff and volunteers, downtown building and business owners, and local officials. They then assessed MSM against the National Trust Main Street Center’s 10 criteria for Main Street programs nationwide. MSM met or exceeded in all areas. Feedback for improvement in key areas is being considered by the Board and committees.
