Hockey Is… <ul><li>A team sport played on ice </li></ul><ul><li>The fastest team sport in the world </li></ul><ul><li>Most popular in Canada, United States and Russia </li></ul><ul><li>One of the four major North American professional sports </li></ul><ul><li>Played mostly indoors for pros and outdoors for kids leagues </li></ul><ul><li>The official national winter sport of Canada </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Hockey like games were brought to Canada by European immigrants </li></ul><ul><li>The Irish sport of hurling, the Scottish sport of shinty and versions of field hockey played in England </li></ul><ul><li>Ice hockey was first recorded as being played in the early 1800’s </li></ul><ul><li>They’re not positive where hockey came from because there is many stories, but Windsor, Nova Scotia or Kingston could be the birthplace of ice hockey in Canada </li></ul>History of Ice Hockey

Modern Hockey <ul><li>Modern hockey started out in Montreal </li></ul><ul><li>On March 3, 1875, the first indoor hockey game was played at Montreal’s Victoria Skating Rink </li></ul><ul><li>In 1877 some McGill students made up seven ice hockey rules and enforced them </li></ul><ul><li>Winnipeg hockey players introduced cricket pads, which helped protect the goaltenders legs and the scoop shot (wrist shot) </li></ul><ul><li>The Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup (later known as Stanley Cup) was first awarded to Montreal in 1893 </li></ul>

How to Play Hockey <ul><li>It is played in a hockey rink </li></ul><ul><li>The object of the game is to score on the other teams net and get more goals then the other team </li></ul><ul><li>There is 5 people on the rink and a goalie, 2 defenseman, 1 center and 2 wings </li></ul><ul><li>You use a stick to shoot the puck at the net </li></ul><ul><li>You wear lots of equipment so you are not hurt from the puck or others surrounding you </li></ul><ul><li>There are referees that call penalties and goals </li></ul><ul><li>There are linesmen that call icing and offside </li></ul>

World Junior Hockey Championships <ul><li>We have won 15 gold medals </li></ul><ul><li>We have won 6 silver medals </li></ul><ul><li>We have won 4 bronze medals </li></ul><ul><li>The total medal count being 25 </li></ul><ul><li>We have the most medals in the World Junior Championships </li></ul><ul><li>This year was their fifth gold medal in a row </li></ul>

Winter Olympics <ul><li>The men are tied for first place with Sweden in the Olympics for the most medals </li></ul><ul><li>The women are tied for first place with United States in the Olympics for the most medals </li></ul><ul><li>Canada won the six of the seven first Olympics </li></ul><ul><li>Out of all the tournaments in the Olympics, Canada has won the most medals with the total of 16 </li></ul>

How does hockey make us Canadian? <ul><li>Ice Hockey was started in Canada </li></ul><ul><li>We do well in every tournament we go in </li></ul><ul><li>We have the most medals at the Olympic Games </li></ul><ul><li>Lots of the population plays hockey </li></ul><ul><li>It is on ice and we have a lot of that! </li></ul>

How does hockey make us Canadian? <ul><li>We have the most medals in the World Juniors </li></ul><ul><li>It was the fifth gold medal won in a row </li></ul><ul><li>Canadian fans and players are very passionate about hockey </li></ul><ul><li>It is our national winter sport </li></ul><ul><li>We watch it on television </li></ul><ul><li>We give a lot of support to team Canada </li></ul>
