Sanitation- In Kibera by Emma Kibera is the biggest slum in Nairobi, it is home to around a million people. Although it is built on land owned by Nairobi City Council, Kibera is an illegal settlement, and so relay's on a privately organised water supply. And as a result of this the slum consists of is ancient stinking latrines, open sewers, no proper drains and no rubbish collection. Disease is common in the slum, and passed on mainly though the water. Sanitation is obliviously very poor. This a picture of one of the open sewers in Kibera, this particular one flows right thought the centre of a nursery school. 10P

However the situation is set to improve in the near future. Wilson Gudima has lived in Kibera for 25 years. He is a member of a community-based organisation dedicated to cleaning up the area. The Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG), has just employed a local architect as project manager on a pilot scheme to bring clean water and sanitation to Kibera. When the community were asked what they wanted toilets were found to be a priority. And so a project was embarked upon to provide separate male and female toilets, toilets for children and for the disabled. This is what Wilson Gudima said about the project: "There are bathrooms for both sexes, an information centre which will double as a kiosk to sell clean water, a small community library, and an area where women can wash clothes and utensils. "On the upper floor is the boardroom for the community meetings. Having the meeting room on top is also to encourage maintenance. No one is going to let the toilets smell." When this project is complete water tanks will be placed on the roof so that there will always be clean water in the area. What is being done about it?

What are the problems with the scheme and how will they be overcome? Some problems will be encountered with the scheme. Although Kibera has water, the supply is not reliable and the taps are often dry and the poor state of the existing sewers will make it impossible to connect up the new flushing toilets – they would simply add to the flow of sewage which already floods through Kibera. And so instead the waste will be collected in digesters that can produce methane. This methane can be used for fuel or sold on, generating income for the community. Everything will be built by the community and so will generate ever more income for the area. Once three pilot blocks have been successfully built, the plan is to spread out across Kibera. It will take another 200 blocks to provide for all the inhabitants.

With every small scheme that takes place in this area, the better the quality of life will become for the people of Kibera. Thank you for watching

The project is in its 2nd year and so far 3 water tanks of 10,000 liters have been installed one of them being at Makina Baptist School. The remaining two are located in Kisumu Ndogo village and are managed by Darajani Women Group and Kisumu Ndogo Usafi na Maendeleo Group
In addition to the water points the project has helped the community to construct 2 VIP latrines of 4 doors managed commercially

Waste Management
Waste management is done by the Afya group of youths to whom the project helped develop a garbage collection point that is also used for sorting, preparing waste for composting within the slum and incineration of non plastics. After sorting and composting the youth market materials to business around Kibera

The Project is benefiting everyone
The project beneficiaries are residents of Kisumu Ndogo and teachers and pupils of Makina Baptist School. By the end of the 2nd year more than 6500 residents and 470 teachers and pupils will benefit from the project both directly and indirectly. This includes all the age groups. Distribution by gender gives 4,200 women and about 2,770 men

Maintaining the facilities
They will also have had adequate capacity building to manage O&M of the installations and also take charge of leadership and mobilization of their fellow residents as a way of transferring and sharing knowledge on health and hygiene as trained hygiene promoters. Training in environmental conservation and sanitation is another key area that the project’s software component continues to put more emphasis.
For the sustainability of the facilities, the two communities continue to receive relevant training on management, records keeping and leadership roles. Environmental protection was addressed.

The project goals were achieved through specific objectives of the project as follows:
To improve the standard of living of the informal settlement by providing access to adequate potable water.
To facilitate the installation of water storage tanks using the Kentainer tanks for long lasting and easy maintenance by the community.
To rehabilitate the water piping system from the water mains to the delivery point.
To improve water quality through SODIS water disinfection technology, which is currently in use.
To strengthen community management and institutional capacity in order to run and manage installed facilities.
To promote health through hygiene education, water and sanitation facilities, environmental, and waste management issues.
To facilitate gender equity in project formulation, decision making and management facilities and services.
To improve the cleanliness of the environment through organised garbage collection in the community.
To empower the communities to save through the compulsory group savings from funds generated from the project.

The first toilets and water system

In the past clean, safe water has been hard to come by in the town of Kibera. Many people have suffered due to the hygeine and sanitary problems. Now the Nairobi city council is trying to improve the dreadful standards.

1 st community water point
The water point was officially introduced as a water vending point in March 2004 by an Executive Director from Canada. The 6,000-litre tank has been placed on the eastern side of Kisumu Ndogo village and it serves more than 2,000 people in the neighbourhood.

2 nd community water point
This water point has been installed at Makina Baptist primary school. It is connected to the municipal water supply. It provides water for hygiene purposes drinking, cooking and sprinkling on the dusty classroom floors. The school has a water committee that is in charge of the water bills and operation and maintenance.

The Supply of Water in Kibera by Gabrielle In Kibera they do have a supply of water but the pipes are plastic and have holes in them, therefore the water mixes with the sewage and becomes contaminated. A family living in a slum would generally use about 5 to 10 litres of water a day. A middle or high income family would use about 50 to 150 litres per day. The lack of access to water causes a lot of health problems. Around 1.8million people die of diarrhoea every year, 90% of them are children under 5. A dirty and forgotten place, Kibera doesn’t appear on many maps, even though it is home to 800,000 people or one-third of Nairobi’s population! 10C

There are only 25km of pipes in the whole of Kibera! This means that most of the residents are forced to buy from private vendors who are allegedly stealing water from the water company.
When there is a Nairobi show (which happens every year), all the water goes there. Because of this they have to travel twice as long as they would normally have to to get water and what would normally cost them 3 shillings, costs them 20!

KWAHO
But, despite this grim picture, there actually HAVE been improvements to some areas in Kibera!
Because of organizations such as KWAHO (Kenya Water for Health Organisation), water has been easier to access and is of better quality. Also the supply of water has greatly increased.
KWAHO runs classes on hygiene and sanitation as well and promotes the use of plastic bottles and solar energy to disinfect water.
So it’s not all bad!

Conclusion
In conclusion KWAHO has been able to develop and manage their own resources. Hygiene and campaign skills impacted on the group will go on in the community. KWAHO will also continue to monitor, guide and motivate them to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Water (KWAHO) KENYA WATER FOR HEALTH ORGANISATION Background
KWAHO is a non-governmental organization which sets up projects across Africa to help poor people.
They provide clean, safe water access within easy reach for residents living in a village.
Providing proper sanitation and stopping waterborne diseases.
The project is in its 2nd year and so far 3 water tanks of 10,000 litres have been installed one of them being at Makina Baptist School. The remaining two are located in Kisumu Ndogo village and are managed by Darajani Women Group and Kisumu Ndogo Usafi na Maendeleo Group (partner CBOs) respectively.

Projected Improvements
The project is concentrated in Kisumu/Ndogo and pupils and teachers attending Makina Baptist School.
It is hoped that 6500 teachers and 470 students will be benefited directly and indirectly.
The water point (tank) was officially inaugurated as a water vending point in March 2004 by WaterCan Executive Director, Carl Nicholson from Canada. The 6,000-litre tank is situated on the eastern side of Kisumu Ndogo village and it serves more than 2,000 people in the neighborhood. The initial survey and connection of water to the tank was done by the Nairobi City Council.

PHAST- Participatory Hygiene and Sanitation Transformation
The two CBO’s and the school community have benefited from a total of 21 days each of PHAST training and 10 days for the school community. The training sessions were spread throughout the project duration. There are 10 training reports compiled and the outcome of each report formed the basis on which the successive materials were developed.
The following were the main objectives of PHAST: • To encourage hygiene through community participatory approaches. • To support gender issues and task study as a way of empowering in community advance. • To face the members on hygiene and cleanliness issues as a way of provoking change. • To increase group unity and input community activities. • The last training held in August 16th and August 20th was training of trainers (TOT) geared towards making the group members, PHAST trainers capable of producing PHAST training tools using locally available resources.

Water Sanitation in Kibera by Francesca Potable water in the slum of Kibera, in Nairobi, is very hard to come across, and aid agencies are working alongside members of the Kibera community to provide a fixed supply of potable water that will reduce waterborne diseases and improve sanitation. KWAHO (Kenyan Water and Health Organisation), WaterCan and WatSan are among the organisations working in the area. Recently, the teams have put in place 3 10,000 litre water tanks, one of which is for the local school. The water tanks provide a clean, safe drinking water supply, water for the two newly installed latrines and hand basins, as well as for cooking. These tanks will be monitored by representatives of the organisations, to ensure that the water is managed sustainably and in a way to benefit the whole community. Water Sanitation in Kibera
Since the introduction of the water sanitation schemes, there have been a number of positive changes in the community of Kibera:
Decrease in number of cases of diseases linked to waterborne bacteria.
Decrease in the number of deaths due to dirty water.
Decrease in the amount of money spent on private investor sources of water.
On average, women spend less time collecting water from far away sources; this time can in turn be spent working to generate a larger income.
The project has succeeded in the following aims:
Challenging the members of the community on hygiene and sanitation as a way of provoking transformation and development.
Providing over 3,000 people with potable water (the project is still in its early stages).
Encouraging the community members to take control of their own futures and promoting self-sufficiency.
Improving the standard of living through access to adequate potable water, the cleanliness of the environment and hygiene education.
Strengthening the community’s management skills.
To improve water quality through SODIS disinfection technology.

Water Sanitation in Kibera
Another important project is run by AMREF. This project has been running since 1998 and works towards reducing levels of disease by improving sanitation. This aims to improve access to clean water for 97,000 residents.
So far, the project has:
Built 45 water points
Raised awareness about the risk of drinking dirty water
Improved water conditions, reducing diarrhoeal infections by 10%.
In addition to water sanitation, AMREF have improved hygiene and health in Kibera, saving thousands of lives.

Kibera is one of the largest slums in Africa, with over one million inhabitants. As an informal settlement it does not receive public services. Inadequate watersupply and sanitation, poor housing and overcrowding are serious environmental health challenges. This programme focuses on two of the 10 villages in Kibera, in which AMREF will facilitate and mobilize the community to invest in water, sanitation and hygiene; while at the same time convincing the government to take responsibility. The project described here is part of a big integrated health programme and builds further on the school component within that program. Here, one school is singled out to serve as an example.
Personal Hygiene and Sanitation Education (PHASE), is a successful school health model that has been developed during the late nineties and has been widely implemented in mainly rural settings. Based on the successes of this project in terms of reduction of water borne diseases and school absenteeism, the Government of Kenya has incorporated PHASE into its policy framework. Since most primary schools in Kibera are non-formal and run by community-based groups and other non-governmental institutions. Therefore, the curriculum at these schools deviates from the national curriculum. Moreover, the slum context of Kibera is very different from the rural context in which PHASE was initially implemented.

Kibera, on the southern edge of Nairobi, is Africa’s largest slum with a population of over 800,000 people. Residents of the slum do not have access to running water, sanitation, lighting, refuse collection or health facilities.
This, coupled with poverty and overcrowding, mean that people are vulnerable to diseases, such as HIV and TB.
AMREF has been working since 1998 to improve health standards in two regions of Kibera - Laini Saba and Mashimoni. It has funded the construction of a clinic in Laini Saba and is working to reduce levels of disease by improving sanitation and providing education and medical treatment.

So far this project has employed 57 local labourers to build 286 latrines and 45 water points - helping to discourage the unhygienic custom of the “flying toilet” in which human waste is dumped on the ground in plastic bags

So what has AMREF done so far? Well, it’s employed 57 local labourers to build 286 toilets and 45 water points. That’s a lot of toilets! It’s also raised awareness at 5 local schools about health, sanitation and hygiene and has recruited community workers and youth groups for regular clean-ups in residential areas.
Water and sanitation conditions have been improved and according to AMREF’s website, diarrhoeal infections have been reduced from 24% in 2004 to 13% in 2006.
The local clinic has been renovated and the local health workers have been given extensive training, thus improving the access to health care.
The levels of testing for HIV/AIDS and TB have also been increased. AMREF has also provided anti-retroviral treatment for 1000 HIV/AIDS sufferers and 394 people with TB have been given treatment. 637 people who are being treated for HIV/AIDS have been given supplementary vitamins and special medicine has been provided for 40 children with HIV/AIDS.

Water project
The Kibera Integrated Water, Sanitation and Waste Management Project (WATSAN) is aiming at contributing towards the improvement of the city, by supporting the sanitation and waste management. The project will contribute to the on-going Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme (KENSUP) which is a collaborative initiative between the Government of Kenya and UN-HABITAT. The project had the following objectives:
Supporting improved accessibility to water, sanitation and credit facilities.
Supporting improvements to the drainage system.
Initiating small-scale door-to-door waste collection and recycling initiatives.
Enabling the Soweto East community to gain basic knowledge of computers and internet accessibility.
Popularising a non-motorised transport system (improved bicycle transport) for the improvement of life still.
Establishing and strengthening governmental frameworks to regulate distribution and accessibility to water and sanitation.
The project is also seeking to popularise a non-motorised transport system - The Kibera Bicycle Transport Project (KBTP) - as one of the components. The project is engaging local artisans in the design and fabrication of bicycle/tricycle trailer systems for multipurpose uses by the local community to improve the transport needs.

Activities
The construction of a 2.5km low-volume upgraded road, a 1.8 km storm water drains and improvement of two foot bridges, to make easier the movement of people and goods within the greater Kibera area.
Sanitation improvement by constructing communal water and sanitation facilities in strategic locations connecting them to piped water and providing for local storage.
This also includes small-scale door-to-door waste collection and recycling demonstrations.

Results
Cooperation Agreement signed with Maji na Ufanisi (Water and Development) a local NGO for projects implemented.
Community mobilization according to zones in Soweto East was successful.
Physical identification of all the sites for the proposed infrastructure.
Design work for all the proposed infrastructure and information of education and communication materials.
Prototype for the non-motorised transport system developed in Kibera using local artisans.
Upper container floor of the UN-HABITAT site offices cleared for partitioning to accommodate the ICT centre.
Construction of the infrastructure on course.

Rubbish to vegetables
The youth in Kandimiru, one of the villages within the slum have, through a self-help group, established the first organic farm on what was once a garbage dumpsite.
“ We wanted to keep the area clean so we saw it fit to have a garden,” Augustine Oramisi, the chairman of the Kibera Youth Initiative for Community Development, a local umbrella body for self-help groups in Kibera.

Rubbish into cash
Taka ni Pato promotes its mission of solid waste management and public awareness about recycling.
TNP trained six youth groups consisting of up to sixty members each on how to generate income by collecting trash, sorting, and selling recyclables products.
Over 2,000 tons of garbage and waste were removed from Kibera by TNP.
Sixty-seven youth are currently active participants in TNP, and since its inception, nearly 200 youth have been involved.

Power to the people!
Kibera Youth Solar project This is an innovative youth project for the production and sales of solar portable lamps in Kenya for people with low income. Starting with Kibera slum in Nairobi.
Purposes • To promote solar portable lamps for daily use in Kibera creating jobs for young people.• To replace the inappropriate kerosene lamps (bad light, toxic smokes, risk of fire)
Pilot project (till end of 2009) Since August 2009 the pilot project is under way where 1500 solar portable lamps are being assembled in Kibera. Some will be sold to the local people especially the low-income earners and a part are imported back and sold as fair-trade products.
Partners • Kibera community youth programme is a youth organization in Kenya. Already they make solar mobile phone chargers and mini solar panels for radios. Won Clear Energy World Award in 2007.•

Power to the people!
One portable solar lamp per Kid
In Kibera,kerosene lamps are the main source of light, used to light up small one-roomed shacks. The streets are dark and dangerous at night given that there are no streetlights, especially for children.
After 6 pm in the evening children have to stay in the house or risk being abused, raped or mugged.
With this initiative we would like to support the children living in Kibera to own solar lamps which they can use to do homework, use as a torch or to light toilets which are always situated outside residential houses.
The solar lamps will permit school children to do their homework at night and therefore being better at school.
For torches they currently use dry cells batteries of low quality and often need replacement every 2 weeks. Thrown into the garbage they release several dangerous toxins and are very wasteful of scarce resources.
