  1. 1. Helpful strategies for dealing with emotional students with challenging behaviors
  2. 2. Why are challenging behaviors so challenging?????? <ul><li>Impulsivity- the inclination of an individual to initiate behavior without adequate acknowledgement of consequences for their actions. </li></ul>
  3. 3. 2 types of Impulsivity <ul><li>Behavioral Impulsivity- </li></ul><ul><li>The things that you do. These impulses are often the ones that students continue to do even after they have been told not to. </li></ul><ul><li>Cognitive Impulsive- the things that you say. </li></ul><ul><li>These behaviors are usually involve students not reasoning consequence beforehand and just guessing what may occur. </li></ul>
  4. 4. What does Impulsivity look like? <ul><li>Overreaction to minor situations </li></ul><ul><li>Rushing through activities </li></ul><ul><li>Acting without thoughts or planning </li></ul><ul><li>Interruptions that are off topic </li></ul>
  5. 5. How do you teach the concept “stop and think”????? <ul><li>Cause Effect </li></ul><ul><li>If I do this then that is likely to happen </li></ul>
  6. 6. Use preventive problem solving skills <ul><li>The students need to ask themselves the questions….. </li></ul><ul><li>What Happened? </li></ul><ul><li>What did I do? </li></ul><ul><li>What should I have done? </li></ul><ul><li>Next time I will….. </li></ul>
  7. 7. There are four basic steps in problem solving: <ul><li>Ih Defining the problem: What was the trian and trigger and who was involved? </li></ul>
  8. 8. Come up with alternatives- what could I have done in that situation that would have been better????
  9. 9. Selecting alternative behaviors and reactions. Which choice would be good, better, best .
  10. 10. <ul><li>Implementing solutions: </li></ul><ul><li>evaluate successful situations and focus on good decision making </li></ul><ul><li>Good Decisions = Successfulness </li></ul>
  11. 11. Determine what makes you feel a certain way….
  12. 12. Things that make me blow my cool: <ul><li>Examples: </li></ul><ul><li>Math </li></ul><ul><li>Tests </li></ul><ul><li>Mean People </li></ul><ul><li>People making fun of me </li></ul>
  13. 13. Things that make me grumpy: <ul><li>Examples </li></ul><ul><li>Loud noises </li></ul><ul><li>Crowds </li></ul><ul><li>Changes in my schedule </li></ul>
  14. 14. Things that make me happy: <ul><li>Examples: </li></ul><ul><li>Reading books </li></ul><ul><li>Listening to Music </li></ul><ul><li>Computer time </li></ul><ul><li>Playing outside </li></ul>

Come up with a personal plan <ul><li>Melt down in Lost free time detention </li></ul><ul><li>Math Class </li></ul><ul><li>Next time I </li></ul><ul><li>can try </li></ul><ul><li>Asking for help </li></ul><ul><li>Use self-calming strategies </li></ul><ul><li>Lay my head down and Then restart and Earn a break </li></ul><ul><li>Count to twenty and finish my work </li></ul>
  16. 16. Make sure there is praise provided when the student makes good decisions <ul><li>It is very important to acknowledge when the students make good choices, use their coping skills, and makes the right decision in a difficult situation! </li></ul>
  17. 17. Summary <ul><li>When the trigger to behaviors is an </li></ul><ul><li>Impulsive action. </li></ul><ul><li>The skill to teach is self- regulation. </li></ul><ul><li>The tools to use are those that teach </li></ul><ul><li>stop and think!!!! </li></ul>
