Remain In Christ John15:1-11 Remain In Christ John15:1-11 Presentation Transcript

    • Remain in Christ John 15:1-11 Dave Walters http://www.slideshare.net/Gospelman/abiding-in-christ-john-15-2003
    • John 15:1 NET "I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. 2 He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit in me. He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit.
    • 3 You are clean already because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
    • 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me — and I in him — bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing.
    • 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up.
      • 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.
      • 8 My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples.
      • 9 “Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; remain in my love.
      • 10 If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commandments and remain in his love.
      • 11 I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete.
    • 1. Reside in Christ
      • 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you.
      • Close contact, connection,
      • Living union,
      • Living Communion,
      • Being plugged in
      • Remain Thayer Definition:
      • 1) to remain, abide
      • 1a) in reference to place
      • 1a1) to sojourn, tarry
      • 1a2) not to depart
      • 1a2a) to continue to be present
      • 1a2b) to be held, kept, continually
      • 1b) in reference to time
      • 1b1) to continue to be, not to perish, to last, endure
      • 1b1a) of persons, to survive, live
      • 1c) in reference to state or condition
      • 1c1) to remain as one, not to become another or different
      • 2) to wait for, await one
      • John 6:55 NET For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me, and I in him.
      • 57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who consumes me will live because of me.
      • Colossians 2:6 NET Therefore, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and firm in your faith just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
      • 1 John 2:20 NET Nevertheless you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.
      • 1 John 2:27 NET Now as for you, the anointing that you received from him resides in you,
      • The "anointing" which believers have received refers to the indwelling Holy Spirit which has been given to them at their conversion.
      • (NET notes)
      • and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things, it is true and is not a lie. Just as it has taught you, you reside in him.
      • Since the Bible constantly advocates teaching, John is not ruling out human teachers. At the time when he wrote, however, Gnostic teachers were insisting that the teaching of the apostles was to be supplemented with the "higher knowledge" that they (the Gnostics) claimed to possess.
      • John's response was that what the readers were taught under the Spirit's ministry through the apostles not only was adequate but was the only reliable truth.
      • “ teaches you” The teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit (what is commonly called illumination) does not involve revelation of new truth or the explanation of all difficult passages of Scripture to our satisfaction.
      • Rather, it is the development of the capacity to appreciate and appropriate God's truth already revealed—making the Bible meaningful in thought and daily living.
      • “ all things” All things necessary to know for salvation and
      • Christian living.
      • (NIV Study Bible)
    • 2. How to Stay Plugged In
      • Study &
      • Live The Word
      • 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.
      • Colossians 3:15 NET Let the peace of Christ be in control in your heart (for you were in fact called as one body to this peace), and be thankful.
      • 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and exhorting one another with all wisdom, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, all with grace in your hearts to God.
      • 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
      • Consistent Obedience
        • 10 If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commandments and remain in his love.
      • 1 John 3:24 NET And the person who keeps his commandments resides in God, and God in him. Now by this we know that God resides in us: by the Spirit he has given us.
      • Love One Another
      • 1 John 4:11 NET Dear friends, if God so loved us, then we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time.
      • If we love one another, God resides in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we reside in God and he in us: in that he has given us of his Spirit.
      • 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God.
      • 16 And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has in us. God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides in him.
      • 17 By this love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus is, so also are we in this world.
    • 3. Relying On Christ
      • 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
      • 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me — and I in him — bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing.
      • On our part: Dependence On God’s part: Supply Without it,
      • we are useless
      • 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up.
    • 4. Remaining with Christ
      • 9 “Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; remain in my love.
      • To Remain,
      • To Stay, Continue
      • Acts 27:31 NET Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."
      • Live Righteously
      • 1 John 2:28 NET And now, little children, remain in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink away from him in shame when he comes back.
      • 29 If you know that he is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness has been fathered by him.
    • 5. The Danger of Substitute Vines
      • John 15:1 NET "I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener.
      • Fake-vines
      • At first thrill us,
      • then drain us
      • Matthew 24:11 NET And many false prophets will appear and deceive many, 12 and because lawlessness will increase so much, the love of many will grow cold.
      • 2 Peter 3:15 NET And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom given to him, 16 speaking of these things in all his letters.
      • Some things in these letters are hard to understand, things the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they also do to the rest of the scriptures.
      • 17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard that you do not get led astray by the error of these unprincipled men and fall from your firm grasp on the truth.
    • 6. The Blessings of Remaining In Him
      • Fruitfulness
      • 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me — and I in him — bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing.
