May 25-31 Solomon Sins

 1. 1. Queen of Sheba Visits

The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's wisdom and came to see if the reports were true. Solomon had been given great gifts from God, but instead of responsibly using those gifts in obedience to God,

 2. 2. Queen of Sheba Visits

the king allowed himself to be influenced by others, Christ's followers need to stand against pressure to compromise our faith and what we know to be true.

 3. 3. Queen of Sheba Visits

Jesus made it clear that with blessings also come responsibilities. He summed it up succinctly:

Luke 12:48, KJV "Unto whomsoever much is given,

 4. 4. Queen of Sheba Visits

of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more" .

 5. 5. Queen of Sheba Visits

... Those who are given understanding, ability, goods, money, authority, or fame have a responsibility that the

less favored do not bear; failure to fulfill it produces fearful punishment....

 6. 6. Queen of Sheba Visits

Whatever level of opportunity is given to us, both God and man expect us to give a certain standard of performance. Favor carries with it responsibility. As the favor increases, the responsibility increases....

 7. 7. Queen of Sheba Visits

Arthur Rubinstein, the great pianist, capsulized this principle when he remarked that should he fail to practice one day, he would know it; should he skip practice for two days, the critics would know it; but should that extend to three days "the whole world knows it."

 8. 8. Queen of Sheba Visits

Harry Truman said it well when remarking on the burden of the presidency: " If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen ." The sign on his Oval office desk said, " The buck stops here ."

(From The Secret Kingdom by Pat Robertson)

 9. 9. Queen of Sheba Visits

What responsibilities have you been given to serve God? In what areas are you vulnerable to the influence of others? Ask God to help you stand against those influences.

(Max Lucado Devotional Bible)

 10. 10. Queen of Sheba Visits

The Queen of Sheba came to witness for herself the great wisdom & wealth of King Solomon.

After seeing for herself she said the half had not been told!

 11. 11. Provision for Kingship

I want to take a look at some of the Law of Moses regarding the King.

 12. 12. Provision for Kingship

Deuteronomy 17:14 NET When you come to the land the LORD your God is giving you and take it over and live in it and then say, "I will select a king like all the nations surrounding me,"

 13. 13. Provision for Kingship

15 you must select without fail a king whom the LORD your God chooses. From among your fellow citizens you must appoint a king —

 14. 14. Provision for Kingship

you may not designate a foreigner who is not one of your fellow Israelites. 6 Moreover, he must not accumulate horses for himself or allow the people to return to Egypt to do so,

 15. 15. Provision for Kingship

for the LORD has said you must never again return that way. 17 Furthermore, he must not marry many wives lest his affections turn aside,

 16. 16. Provision for Kingship

and he must not accumulate much silver and gold. 18 When he sits on his royal throne he must make a copy of this law on a scroll given to him by the Levitical priests.

 17. 17. Provision for Kingship

19 It must be with him constantly and he must read it as long as he lives, so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and observe all the words of this law and these statutes and carry them out.

 18. 18. Provision for Kingship

20 Then he will not exalt himself above his fellow citizens or turn from the commandments to the right or left, and he and his descendants will enjoy many years ruling over his kingdom in Israel.

 19. 19. Provision for Kingship

Here’s a quick review of what we just read:

King must be an Israelite

He must not accumulate horses, or let the people go to Egypt to get them.

Must not marry many wives

 20. 20. Provision for Kingship

Must not accumulate much gold and silver

Must make himself a copy of the Law

Must read it and keep it with him constantly as long as he lives so that he may…

 21. 21. Provision for Kingship

Learn to revere God and observe all the words of the law

Will not exalt himself over his fellow citizens

Will not turn from the commands to the right or left.

 22. 22. Provision for Kingship

1 Kings 10:23 NET King Solomon was wealthier and wiser than any of the kings of the earth. 24 Everyone in the world wanted to visit Solomon to see him display his God-given wisdom.

 23. 23. Provision for Kingship

25 Year after year visitors brought their gifts, which included items of silver, items of gold, clothes, perfume, spices, horses, and mules.

 24. 24. Provision for Kingship

26 Solomon accumulated chariots and horses. He had 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horses. He kept them in assigned cities and in Jerusalem.

 25. 25. Violating God’s Commands

Solomon violated God’s commands here, by acquiring many horses.

 26. 26. Provision for Kingship

27 The king made silver as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones; cedar was as plentiful as sycamore fig trees are in the lowlands.

 27. 27. Violating God’s Commands

Solomon was forbidden by God to acquire much silver.

 28. 28. Provision for Kingship

28 Solomon acquired his horses from Egypt and from Que; the king's traders purchased them from Que.

 29. 29.

Your KJV says: 1 Kings 10:28 KJV And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price.

 30. 30. Violating God’s Commands

The word translated “linen yarn” is thought now by Hebraists to mean “a troop” or “company.” If the present reading is retained, they would translate the passage -

 31. 31. Violating God’s Commands

“ As for the bringing up of Solomon’s horses out of Egypt, a band of the king’s merchants fetched a band (or troop) of horses at a price.” But the reading is very uncertain. (Barnes)

 32. 32. Violating God’s Commands

I want to point out here that not only did Solomon disregard the command not to accumulate horses, but he also broke the command not to get them from Egypt.

 33. 33. Solomon's Wealth

1 Kings 10:14 NET Solomon received 666 talents of gold per year, 15 besides what he collected from the merchants, traders, Arabian kings, and governors of the land.

 34. 34. Violating God’s Commands

Not only did Solomon violate God’s command not to accumulate much silver, but also not to accumulate much gold.

 35. 35. Rules In The Promised Land

Deuteronomy 7:1 NET When the LORD your God brings you to the land that you are going to occupy and forces out many nations before you

 36. 36. Rules In The Promised Land

Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, seven nations more numerous and powerful than you

 37. 37. Rules In The Promised Land

2 and he delivers them over to you and you attack them, you must utterly annihilate them. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy!

 38. 38. Rules In The Promised Land

3 You must not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,

 39. 39. Rules In The Promised Land

4 for they will turn your sons away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will erupt against you and he will quickly destroy you.

 40. 40. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

1 Kings 11:1 NET King Solomon fell in love with many foreign women (besides Pharaoh's daughter), including Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites.

 41. 41. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

2 They came from nations about which the LORD had warned the Israelites, "You must not establish friendly relations with them!

 42. 42. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

If you do, they will surely shift your allegiance to their gods." But Solomon was irresistibly attracted to them.

 43. 43. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

3 He had 700 royal wives and 300 concubines; his wives had a powerful influence over him.

 44. 44. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

4 When Solomon became old, his wives shifted his allegiance to other gods; he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God, as his father David had been.

 45. 45. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

5 Solomon worshiped the Sidonian goddess Astarte and the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.

 46. 46. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

6 Solomon did evil in the LORD's sight; he did not remain loyal to the LORD, like his father David had.

 47. 47. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

7 Furthermore, on the hill east of Jerusalem Solomon built a high place for the detestable Moabite god Chemosh and for the detestable Ammonite god Milcom.

 48. 48. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

8 He built high places for all his foreign wives so they could burn incense and make sacrifices to their gods.

 49. 49. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

9 The LORD was angry with Solomon because he had shifted his allegiance away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him on two occasions

 50. 50. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

10 and had warned him about this very thing, so that he would not follow other gods. But he did not obey the LORD's command.

 51. 51. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

11 So the LORD said to Solomon, "Because you insist on doing these things and have not kept the covenantal rules I gave you,

 52. 52. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant. 12 However, for your father David's sake I will not do this while you are alive.

 53. 53. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

I will tear it away from your son's hand instead. 13 But I will not tear away the entire kingdom;

 54. 54. The Lord Punishes Solomon for Idolatry

I will leave your son one tribe for my servant David's sake and for the sake of my chosen city Jerusalem."

 55. 55. Observe Solomon

The point I’m trying to make is the wisest man to ever live messed up! We can never compare to his wisdom so we’re bound to mess up.

 56. 56. A Benefit Solomon Didn’t Have

We do have a benefit he didn’t. We have Jesus, the Son of God, on our side. We have a mediator working on our behalf, pleading our case before God the Father.

 57. 57. A Benefit Solomon Didn’t Have

We also have the gift of God The Spirit helping us. We don’t have a license to violate God’s commands. We do have a lesson in the wisest man to ever live not being good enough to

 58. 58. A Benefit Solomon Didn’t Have

keep God’s commands by himself. How much more we need help in being obedient? If we are willing to commit ourselves to God, He will provide help through His Son & Spirit

 59. 59. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

What follows is commentary from the Max Lucado Devotional Bible

Proverbs provide wisdom and guidance for living an obedient life. Simple words and common sense give us guidelines for daily life.

 60. 60. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

The Proverbs contain many instructions to help steer readers away from sin. Listen to this advice and grow in wisdom.

 61. 61. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

I've thought about what the Scriptures are teaching on wisdom and I've come up with this: Wisdom is the God-given ability to see life with rare objectivity and to handle life with rare stability.

 62. 62. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

When we operate in the sphere of the wisdom of God, when it is at work in our mind and in our life, we look at life through lenses of perception, and we respond to it in calm confidence.

 63. 63. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

There's a remarkable absence of fear. We are not seized with panic. We can either lose our jobs or we can be promoted in our work, and neither will derail us. Why? Because we see it with God-given objectivity. And we handle it in His wisdom.

 64. 64. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

We can dip into an unexpected valley or we can soar to the pinnacle of prosperity, and we can cope with both extremes. His wisdom provides us the necessary objectivity and stability.

 65. 65. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

That's the way life is when it is lived in the palm of His hand. This is not some dreamland fantasy, it is reality.

 66. 66. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

It is the ability to live above the drag of human opinion and horizontal perspective. It is what happens within us when wisdom goes to work.

(From Living on the Ragged Edge

by Charles Swindoll)

 67. 67. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

Today you may be bombarded by people giving advice—talk show hosts, psychics, psychologists. Take more time to listen to God than to television.

 68. 68. Proverbs, Training in Wisdom

At the end of the day, assess which words of wisdom you applied. (or should have)

(Max Lucado Devotional Bible)

 69. 69. Our Conclusion

Here is what I conclude from today’s lesson. Any one can, and most likely will mess up and break Commandments of God.

 70. 70. Our Conclusion

Knowing this should make us look into God’s Word more. It is our teacher. It reveals God’s will to us.

 71. 71. Our Conclusion

With persistent reading & study we will know more about God and train ourselves on how to keep His commands.
