Feb 3-9 Love & Encouragement

 1. 1. Salvation of the LORD

Last week’s lesson left us with Pharaoh’s army catching up with the Israelites who seemingly have no place to run.

 2. 2. Salvation of the LORD

The people cry out to Moses why he brought them out in the desert to die. Then this great statement from Moses:

 3. 3. Salvation of the LORD

Exodus 14:13a,b NET Moses said to the people, "Do not fear! Stand firm and see the salvation of the LORD that he will provide for you today;

 4. 4.

The compiler of our daily reading schedule noted Paul’s comparing of the escape route provided by the Lord to baptism.

Israelites Baptized?
 5. 5. Israelites Baptized?

1 Corinthians 10:1 NET For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea,

 6. 6. Israelites Baptized?

2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,

 7. 7. Israelites Baptized?

They passed through the water in order to escape death and go to the Promised Land.

 8. 8.

How is that different from our baptism today?

We can escape the death of sin in the eternal fire and be on our way to the eternal Promised Land, Heaven.

Compare to Our Baptism
 9. 9. How Short Memories Are!

How short memories are!

It isn’t long before the Israelites cry out to Moses again.

Can they not remember the salvation provided just 2 chapters earlier?

 10. 10. How Short Memories Are!

Exodus 16:2 NET The entire company of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron in the desert. 3 The Israelites said to them,

 11. 11. How Short Memories Are!

"If only we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat,

 12. 12. How Short Memories Are!

when we ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this desert to kill this whole assembly with hunger!"

 13. 13. How Short Memories Are!

This is when God sends the manna & quail to feed the people. This keeps the Israelites content, well, until the next chapter.

 14. 14. How Short Memories Are!

Exodus 17:2 NET So the people contended with Moses, and they said, "Give us water to drink!" Moses said to them, "Why do you contend with me? Why do you test the LORD?"

 15. 15. How Short Memories Are!

3 But the people were very thirsty there for water, and they murmured against Moses and said,

 16. 16. How Short Memories Are!

"Why in the world did you bring us up out of Egypt — to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?"

 17. 17. How Short Memories Are!

4 Then Moses cried out to the LORD, "What will I do with this people? — a little more and they will stone me!"

 18. 18. How Short Memories Are!

Even the great man of God Moses is at his wits end. Perhaps even his faith is tested, but he turns to the Creator Himself for an answer.

 19. 19. How Short Memories Are!

God quenches thirst by having Moses strike the rock in Horeb.

Once again the Israelites witness salvation.

 20. 20. God’s Promise & Conditions

Exodus 19:3 NET Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain, "Thus you will tell the house of Jacob, and declare to the people of Israel:

 21. 21. God’s Promise & Conditions

4 'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt and how I lifted you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.

 22. 22. God’s Promise & Conditions

5 And now, if you will diligently listen to me and keep my covenant, then you will be my special possession out of all the nations, for all the earth is mine,

 23. 23. God’s Promise & Conditions

6 and you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you will speak to the Israelites."

 24. 24. God’s Promise & Conditions

A promise is declared.

The Israelites saw with their own eyes the wonders of God bringing them out of Egypt.

 25. 25. God’s Promise & Conditions

Now, if they will listen to him and keep his covenant they will be His special possession. A kingdom of priests and a holy nation to him.

 26. 26. Prepare For The Lord

Exodus 19:10 NET The LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and make them wash their clothes

 27. 27. Prepare For The Lord

11 and be ready for the third day, for on the third day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.

 28. 28. Baptism Referred to Again?

Am I the only one who sees a Scripture from the Exodus which could be set side by side with New Testament passages concerning baptism?

 29. 29. Baptism Referred to Again?

Hebrews 10:21 NET and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in the assurance that faith brings,

 30. 30. Baptism Referred to Again?

because we have had our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.

 31. 31. Baptism Referred to Again?

23 And let us hold unwaveringly to the hope that we confess, for the one who made the promise is trustworthy.

 32. 32. Baptism Referred to Again?

24 And let us take thought of how to spur one another on to love and good works , 25 not abandoning our own meetings,

 33. 33. Baptism Referred to Again?

as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and even more so because you see the day drawing near.

 34. 34. Baptism Referred to Again?

One of our biggest jobs is encouraging the Christians around us. And all the more as the Day of the Lord draws near.

 35. 35. Baptism Referred to Again?

1 Corinthians 6:11 NET Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

 36. 36. Baptism Referred to Again?

Titus 3:4 NET But "when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared,

 37. 37. Baptism Referred to Again?

5 he saved us not by works of righteousness that we have done but on the basis of his mercy,

 38. 38. Baptism Referred to Again?

through the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us in full measure through Jesus Christ our Savior.

 39. 39. Baptism Referred to Again?

1 Peter 3:18 NET Because Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, to bring you to God, by being put to death in the flesh but by being made alive in the spirit.

 40. 40. Baptism Referred to Again?

19 In it he went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 after they were disobedient long ago

 41. 41. Baptism Referred to Again?

when God patiently waited in the days of Noah as an ark was being constructed. In the ark a few, that is eight souls, were delivered through water.

 42. 42. Baptism Referred to Again?

21 And this prefigured baptism, which now saves you — not the washing off of physical dirt but the pledge of a good conscience to God

 43. 43. Baptism Referred to Again?

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who went into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels and authorities and powers subject to him.

 44. 44. Baptism Referred to Again?

Revelation 7:14 NET So I said to him, "My lord, you know the answer." Then he said to me, "These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation.

 45. 45. Baptism Referred to Again?

They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb!

 46. 46. Baptism Referred to Again?

Revelation 22:14 NET Blessed are those who wash their robes so they can have access to the tree of life and can enter into the city by the gates.

 47. 47. Baptism Referred to Again?

What else does the Scriptures repeatedly emphasize like baptism? Faith & Obedience? I say these work hand in hand with baptism. With out them what good is baptism?

 48. 48. We Will Obey The Lord

Exodus 24:3 NET Moses came and told the people all the LORD's words and all the decisions.

 49. 49. We Will Obey The Lord

All the people answered together, "We are willing to do all the words that the LORD has said,” 4 and Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD.

 50. 50. We Will Obey The Lord

Early in the morning he built an altar at the foot of the mountain and arranged twelve standing stones — according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

 51. 51. We Will Obey The Lord

The Israelites seem content obeying all God says…how long will this last? In the 32nd chapter we see a big rebellion.

 52. 52. The Sin of the Golden Calf

Exodus 32:1 NET

When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him,

 53. 53. The Sin of the Golden Calf

"Get up, make us gods that will go before us. As for this fellow Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him!"

 54. 54. I Will Destroy Them!

Exodus 32:9 NET Then the LORD said to Moses: "I have seen this people. Look what a stiff-necked people they are!

 55. 55. I Will Destroy Them!

10 So now, leave me alone so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them, and I will make from you a great nation."

 56. 56. I Will Destroy Them!

11 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God and said, "O LORD, why does your anger burn against your people,

 57. 57. I Will Destroy Them!

whom you have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians say,

 58. 58. I Will Destroy Them!

'For evil he led them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth'?

 59. 59. I Will Destroy Them!

Turn from your burning anger, and relent of this evil against your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel your servants,

 60. 60. I Will Destroy Them!

to whom you swore by yourself and told them, 'I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven,

 61. 61. I Will Destroy Them!

and all this land that I have spoken about I will give to your descendants, and they will inherit it forever.' “

 62. 62. The Lord Relents

14 Then the LORD relented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

 63. 63. The Lord Relents

I’m sure the Israelites don’t know how close they came to not existing. If not for Moses they would have been wiped out.

 64. 64. 3000 Die For Their Sin

Exodus 32:25 NET Moses saw that the people were running wild, for Aaron had let them get completely out of control, causing derision from their enemies.

 65. 65. 3000 Die For Their Sin

26 So Moses stood at the entrance of the camp and said, "Whoever is for the LORD, come to me." All the Levites gathered around him,

 66. 66. 3000 Die For Their Sin

27 and he said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Each man fasten his sword on his side,

 67. 67. 3000 Die For Their Sin

and go back and forth from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and each one kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.' “

 68. 68. 3000 Die For Their Sin

28 The Levites did what Moses ordered, and that day about three thousand men of the people died.

 69. 69. God’s Punishment Not Complete

God ordered only a few, perhaps the real instigators, to be killed. But, He is not done punishing the Israelites, not even close.

 70. 70. God’s Punishment Not Complete

Exodus 32:30 NET The next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a very serious sin, but now I will go up to the LORD

 71. 71. God’s Punishment Not Complete

perhaps I can make atonement on behalf of your sin." 31 So Moses returned to the LORD and said,

 72. 72. God’s Punishment Not Complete

"Alas, this people has committed a very serious sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold.

 73. 73. God’s Punishment Not Complete

23 But now, if you will forgive their sin…, but if not, wipe me out from your book that you have written."

 74. 74. God’s Punishment Not Complete

33 The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me — that person I will wipe out of my book.

 75. 75. God’s Punishment Not Complete

34 So now go, lead the people to the place I have spoken to you about. See, my angel will go before you.

 76. 76. God’s Punishment Not Complete

But on the day that I punish, I will indeed punish them for their sin."

 77. 77. God’s Punishment Not Complete

35 And the LORD sent a plague on the people because they had made the calf — the one Aaron made.

 78. 78. God’s Punishment Not Complete

No immediate judgments were inflicted, but this early lapse into idolatry was always mentioned as an aggravation of their subsequent apostasies. (JFB)

 79. 79. Israelites Give Above & Beyond

We move now to the construction of the Tabernacle Sanctuary and its furnishings.

Note the people now seem to fall in line and give more than required.

 80. 80. Israelites Give Above & Beyond

Exodus 36:4 NET So all the skilled people who were doing all the work on the sanctuary came from the work they were doing 5 and told Moses,

 81. 81. Israelites Give Above & Beyond

"The people are bringing much more than is needed for the completion of the work which the LORD commanded us to do!"

 82. 82. Israelites Give Above & Beyond

6 Moses instructed them to take his message throughout the camp, saying, "Let no man or woman do any more work for the offering for the sanctuary."

 83. 83. Israelites Give Above & Beyond

So the people were restrained from bringing any more. 7 Now the materials were more than enough for them to do all the work.

 84. 84. A Time of Calm

Troubled times aren’t over for the Israelites, but for now there seems to be a time of calm & obedience to The Lord.

 85. 85. A Time of Calm

Has our faith in Jesus brought a calm to our lives? Do we go about our calling of Love and Encouragement?
