  2. 2. Piecing It All Together What is Service-Learning? “… a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic standards to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” *National Commission on Service Learning*

Piecing It All Together <ul><li>According to Learn and Serve America’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse: </li></ul><ul><li>“ It actively engages participants in meaningful and personally relevant service activities. Indicators are: </li></ul><ul><li>1. Service-learning experiences are appropriate to participant ages and developmental abilities. </li></ul><ul><li>2. Service-learning addresses issues that are personally relevant to the participants. </li></ul><ul><li> 3. Service-learning provides participants with interesting and engaging service activities. </li></ul>

Indicators are: </li></ul><ul><li>4. Service-learning encourages participants to understand their service experiences in the context of the underlying societal issues being addressed. </li></ul><ul><li>5. Service-learning leads to attainable and visible outcomes that are valued by those being served.” </li></ul>

US history students conducting interviews to collect, record, and preserve oral histories from elders in their community </li></ul><ul><li>YES </li></ul><ul><li>3. A 7 th grade global studies class going to work at the local community garden that grows for food for a local food bank. </li></ul><ul><li>Maybe </li></ul><ul><li>4. Elementary students sponsoring a sled dog team at the Iditarod. </li></ul><ul><li>NO </li></ul>
