  2. 2. Working Title filmsWorking Title Films is a British film production company based in London. Thecompany produces feature films and numerous television productions.Working Title Films was co-founded by producers Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in1983. In 1992, PolyGram became the company’s corporate backer. Radclyffe leftWorking Title and Eric Fellner, a fellow independent film producer, joined thecompany. The company produced a variety of films for PolyGram’s London basedproduction company (PolyGram Filmed Entertainment). PolyGram films was latermerged and sold to Universal Studios in 1990.Working Title use the template of having a British film with an American star to makemoney.Working Title usually do 40-50 projects in development at any time and their averagespend on development is around $250,000 to $500,000 per script.They aim to make around 5 -10 films a year, spread across different budget sizes(with and average of $30-$40 million)

ProductionTom Hooper, the director of Les Miserables wanted to do something that had neverbeen done before and have the actors/actresses sing live on set and not pre-record thesongs for the film. When the actors were singing they had an invisible earpiece whichhad a piano being played live into their ear so they could hear the music and set thetempo and whilst editing a 70 piece orchestra was used to accompany the actorsvoices for the final production. Simon Hayes used 50 DPA 4071 lavalier microphonesto record the vocals.Tom Hooper chose to have the actors sing live to give a sense of realism to the film andgive the actors freedom and control. Using this way of working you get the fragility ofthe voice which matches the emotions of what a character is saying. It also helps theaudience connect with the characters and feel for them.

ProductionThe filming for Les Miserables began on 8th March 2012 in Gourdon in France and on23rd June 2012, Hugh Jackman confirmed that all filming had been completed, butsome late filming was carried out in Bath, Somerset in October due to an error foundin the footage of stunt scenes of Javert’s suicide scene in the post-production, so itwas re shot.In this film there is a lot of big name actors such as Anne Hathaway and HughJackman, who both did a lot for the film such as losing a considerable amount ofweight and cutting of their own hair. Other names including Amanda Seyfriend, EddieRedmayne, Russell Crowe, Samatha Barks, Helena Bonham-Carter and Sacha BaronCohen have main parts in this film.The budget for Les Miserables was $61 Million and sofar has made $379,064,425 at the box office.

Les Miserables was distributed by Universal Pictures, who DistributionWorking Title are a subsidiary of and part of the conglomerateNBC Universal.In North America, the film opened on 25th December in 2,808 cinemas placing first atthe box office with $18.1 million. This amount broke the record for the highestopening day gross for a musical film, previously held by High School Musical 3: SeniorYear, and was also the second highest opening day gross for a film released onChristmas Day. MarketingOn 30 May 2012, the films first teaser trailer debuted online, and later in cinemaswith Snow White and the HuntsmanOn 20 September 2012, an extended first look was released on the filmsofficial Facebook page. This short introduces and explains Hoopers method of recordingvocals live on set, and compares it to the traditional method of pre-recording the vocalsin a studio months in advance. Hugh Jackman stated that filming in this way allows himmore creative freedom with the material and that he "only has to worry about acting it."Both Hooper and the actors believe that this choice of production method will make thefilm feel much more emotional, raw, and real. The actors praised Hooper for his methodand provide brief interviews throughout the video.
